Chvrches Every Open Eye review – bittersweet second album
(Virgin EMI/Goodbye Records)After the success of Chvrches’ 2013 debut The Bones of What You Believe, the Glaswegian trio became almost as well known for the torrent of misogynistic online abuse targeted at frontwoman Lauren Mayberry as for their stellar brand of 80s-infused ELECTRO op. This follow-up continues their bouncy, synth-heavy sound, but with some defiant retorts for the trolls. “I’ll go my own way if I’m going at all,” Mayberry sings on the opener, Never Ending Circles. This uplifting yet bittersweet undercurrent characterises the best songs, such as Clearest Blue – a Eurythmics-esque track that builds to an explosion of DANCE euphoria. Next to this shimmering peak, a few songs pale in comparison. Continue reading...

Chvrches Every Open Eye review – second album adds intensity and subtlety
(Virgin) Related: Chvrches: ‘We could have sold 200,000 more records if we hid us boys out of view’ Three strident synth-pop bangers open the second Chvrches album and lay bare the Scottish trio’s intent: here they are doubling down on the formula that got them where they are today. It’s an assured follow-up to their US-conquering debut, The Bones of What You Believe, picking out its predecessor’s stadium-pop moments and turning up the intensity without ever overselling its charm. There’s an appealing combination of steely survival and breathless optimism throughout – Make Them Gold and Clearest Blue look towards a better future, with the latter updating Depeche Mode’s Just Can’t Get Enough for the BBC Radio 1 A-list. The tracklisting for the second half might suggest that they’ve taken a turn for the goth – Playing Dead, Bury It, Down Side of Me – but many of those songs provide a welcome pause for thought, featuring more subtleties than the obvious hits. It ends with Afterglow: the hangover after the party, and it’s Chvrches at their prettiest. Continue reading...
Band of Horses Why Are You OK review – indie rockers return to wistful euphoria
(Virgin/EMI)After the mainstream ambitions of Infinite Arms and Mirage Rock, Band of Horses’s fifth album makes something of a triumphant return to the wide-eyed, dreamy vulnerability that marked the Seattle band’s first two records. The default mode is anthemic indie-rock that pinpoints the place where wistfulness and euphoria collide, then showers it in effervescent harmonies and melodies. But the songs run the gamut from country-rock to Hag’s unlikely, reverb-laden nod to OMD’s synth hit Souvenir. Ben Bridwell wrote the songs in his GARAGE and there’s a wonderfully homespun feel to the likes of Casual Party, a giddy, New Order-like guitar rush about the pleasures of dogs and children. Whatever, Wherever is a touring MUSIC an’s lovely homage to coming home. Barrel House – wherein Bridwell describes “shifting a chair on the porch, for a better position to enjoy the warmth of the sun” – edges towards self-parody, but emerges as beautifully moving. George Michael the True pictures
Photographer Caroline True's images of George Michael, taken to mark the release of his Symphonica album, will show the singer bouncing back in style from his serious illnessPhotographer Caroline True has brought George Michael fans perhaps the most poised and suave images yet taken of the 50-year-old performer. Her photographs, released to coincide with the tour album Symphonica, out on 17 March, will do much to reassure Michael's public that he has recovered after a traumatic period in a celebrity life that has been as full of incident and misadventure as of music making."This album will show people what his voice is like now, after the terrible pneumonia he had. I would say it is perfection: I may be biased but I think he is the Sinatra of our day."The daughter of the late advertising man Frank True, she grew up, as did Michael, in north-west London. But the two did not become friends until she was working for Virgin Records in the music video department."I first worked with him on the Fastlove video in 1996, and it was just the way it is when you meet anybody you get on with. I had spent my working life around famous people, so I didn't see him like that, not after two tours with the Rolling Stones."The blue-tinted close-up portrait that appears behind Michael's Twitter page was taken by True when they were in Sydney together in 2011, before he developed the illness that took him close to death. The glamorous shots she took in Paris to mark the end of the Symphonica tour are a deliberate celebration of his survival. "When you work with people you know, it is always so much easier. I know what makes him laugh, for a start. He may dress casually in his own time, but like any star, he likes to look smart in public. He looks quite Rat Pack in his Armani suit."The major coup of the photo-shoot came about when True persuaded the guardians of the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris to allow her to photograph Michael on its roof, an honour only previously afforded to Grace

Ashley Dotty Charles Few moments compare to meeting Oprah
The rapper and radio presenter on the problem with online activism, the power of protest, and the moment Oprah squeezed her handAshley “Dotty” Charles is the host of BBC’s 1Xtra breakfast show. Charles, 32, grew up in south London with two brothers and a sister and began rapping at 13. After a brief spell in Los Angeles with her family as a teenager, Charles moved back to the UK, graduated from Kingston University and, in 2012, signed to Virgin Records – the first British female MC to sign a major label album deal in more than a decade. She now lives in Surrey with her wife and their three-year-old son, with another baby on the way. Her forthcoming debut book, Outraged: Why Everyone Is Shouting and No One Is Talking, is published by Bloomsbury.Your book is a swipe at the empty rhetoric of activism that only exists with a hashtag online. It’s timely now, but what prompted it?I was on holiday in Thailand when I checked my phone – I shouldn’t have – and landed on an online feeding frenzy, one of those occasional social media moments where everyone is shouting about the same thing. Wall-to-wall fury. The currency of outrage, to me, was so twisted that I ended up writing about it in the Guardian. The feedback was amazing and I felt I’d found my tribe. Book publishers got in touch after that. Continue reading...

LIKE A VIRGIN DIRTY VEGAS
LIKE A VIRGIN: DIRTY VEGASGrammy award-winners tell us about their first ever gigIssue:532Electronic dance band Dirty Vegas are back with a new single and video, 'Let The Night', out now on D:Vision Records. Watch it here:
Now slimmed down to a two-piece, Steve Smith and Paul Harris have had a chequered career in the industry. Their first single, 'Days Go By', cracked the Top 30 in the UK in 2001, and then the Top 20 in 2002 on re-release with their eponymous debut album, but their career really took off when the track was chosen to front a Mitsubishi advert in the US.
The track went on to win a Grammy award for Best Dance Recording, and the guys went on to remix big acts such as Madonna and Justin Timberlake. After two albums, 'Dirty Vegas' and 'One', they split in 2005, but got back together four years later and have now readied the 'Electric Love' album for release.
We asked Dirty Vegas to tell us about their first ever gig...
“In late 2001, while we were finishing our debut album, we only played a handful of showcase dates. We were really just focused on finishing our album, so not really thinking about a live show. Although we were all previously in bands, Ben Harris (guitars), Paul Harris (keys/synths) and myself Steve Smith (vocals/guitars/percussion), we hadn't formed as a live band but from a studio session.
“In early 2002 while still finishing our album, we got the news that our song 'Days Go By' was chosen for a Mitsubishi commercial in the USA. Our new US label, Capitol Records, told us that we needed to be 'visible' in the USA to promote the new record. We were then asked to open for electronic legend, Moby, for his US summer tour. We flew straight to Dallas the night before the first show, and turned up at the huge Bronco Bowl for our soundcheck. Seeing as this was the first night for Moby also, the band and production seemed to have some 'technical' issues. Time was ticking, and we were getting anxious as this was Dirty Vegas' first ever show in front

Babyface Return of the Tender Lover review – oldschool RB smoothie
(Virgin) Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds’ 1989 album, Tender Lover, established him as the, er, baby face of smooth-tonsilled RB. Umpteen Grammys later, and with Edmonds now aged 56, Return of the Tender Lover goes back to the source. This is old-school RB with a fine glass finish, the musicianship and production audibly expensive and the man’s voice so honeyed it presumably requires the attentions of worker bees. Every song is about love, from the catchy and bouncy We’ve Got Love to the gossamer Fight for Love. Humbled, adorational love (“I’m mystified that you have chosen me”, “When I’m with you I’m walking on air”) is a specialist subject; Exceptional could be a Michael Jackson ballad. The best tracks turn up the temperature from cool to simmer: Love and Devotion has something of the airy atmosphere of Marvin Gaye’s lurve records, while I Want You (featuring After 7) finds the old smoothie coming dangerously close to working up a sweat. Paul Simon Stranger to Stranger review – a fivestar tour through new sounds
(Virgin EMI) Related: Simon and Garfunkel: 'To a degree, our hostility is a setup' – a classic interview from the vaults “It’s hard working the same piece of clay, day after day, year after year,” sings Paul Simon on the title track of Stranger to Stranger, his first album since So Beautiful Or So What in 2011. But his tenacious pursuit of new sounds, such as the unique microtonal instruments of composer Harry Partch on Insomniac’s Lullaby, and juxtapositions such as the gnarled blues guitar (played by Simon) and cello on The Riverbank, make this album as rewarding as anything he’s done. The creaky slide guitars, distant train whistles and street-corner harmony groups on songs such as Wristband and The Clock hark back to the records of the 1940s and 50s. Yet the samples and loops amid the album’s dusty ambience mean it’s no exercise in nostalgia. Simon’s lyrics are finely honed, from the conversational The Werewolf to the confessional title track, a moving exploration of his creative process. “Just a way of dealing with my joy,” as he puts it.
