  • House savants Arches coming in hot to 2015 with EARMILK set Exclusive Mix
Belgium-based house savants Arches are DANCE stars in the making, and they prove the point with a new exclusive mix for EARMILK.  The mix comes on the heels of a massive year, which brought remixes of DANCE heavy hitters like the Magician and Kiesza, endorsements from big names like Annie Mac, and...

At the moment, it seems like every month there's another established nightclub under threat. The Arches in Glasgow has just closed down (see our feature on its heritage on page 69), and in the past two years, London — where DJ Mag HQ is — has lost ten clubs.Club Colosseum, the Vibe Bar, Plastic People, Madama JoJo's, Crucifix Lane, Hidden, Cable, Area, Publik and the 12 Bar Club have all bitten the dust. All but three of these had capacities of over a thousand people. The two most famous clubs in London, Fabric and Ministry, have also been under threat in the past year. And now Club 414 in Brixton faces closure. What the hell is going on? It's not as if the ten that have already shut in London in the past couple of years is just natural wastage, and a similar amount of clubs are springing up in their place. Less VENUE means more pressure on existing ones, and far less options for clubbers to go to. The UK DANCE MUSIC industry is a multi-million-pound industry, feted the world over for its innovation and creativity. The UK has been majorly influential in pioneering our global scene, but now the UK's clubs are being squeezed more than most other countries on earth. How is creativity and entertainment supposed to flourish if the very places that incubate the scene are closing or having ludicrous restrictions placed upon them? This issue, DJ Mag is launching our Save Our Clubs campaign. We're going to be working with the Night-Time Industries Association (NTIA) and others to try to help stick up for nightclubs under pressure from the authorities.“Clubs have been facing an increasing raft of issues and regulatory impositions,” Alan D Miller from the NTIA tells DJ Mag. “From demands for extra security to biometrics, CCTV and even sometimes breathalysers, there has been a wrong-minded equating of night-time industry with 'crime' and 'anti-social behaviour'. Yet all the records show that serious crime has decreased in the last ten years, with Brits and visitors enjoying the cultural

  • Cavern of AntiMatter review – epic glorious noise from Stereolab expats
Moth Club, LondonThe new band from Stereolab’s Tim Gane and Joe Dilworth go from raw to rampaging in a show that leaves you happily dazedHackney’s refurbished military veterans’ club is rammed to its ritzy, gold-glittered ARCHES for the London live debut of Tim Gane’s new band. But then his former outfit, Stereolab, were one of the 1990’s most cultish, playfully intellectual, hard left-leaning adventurers in mind-bending grooves. They’ve been on hiatus since 2010, and a couple of years ago, Gane and Stereolab drummer Joe Dilworth embarked on a new quest through the sounds of future past with the German synth maestro Holger Zapf, as Cavern of Anti-Matter (COAM).Their debut album proper, Void Beats/Invocation Trex, has just been released (following last year’s limited double-vinyl Blood-Drums), and it is 12 tracks of unsurprisingly krautrock-flavoured but refreshingly intense workouts, with none of Stereolab’s occasional arch tweeness, where short rhythmic phrases entwine, evolve and expand into pulsing vistas. Wild Beasts | Darkside | Angel Olsen | Salsa Celtica | Trilok Gurtu | Royal Opera & Shakespeare's Globe: L'OrmindoWild Beasts, Manchester & GlasgowWith their whoops, moans, and ribald tales of falling trousers and chips with cheese, the early days of Kendal's Wild Beasts were as much regional comedy as they were indie rock. It was an utterly original proposition, but since those first couple of albums of compelling guitar MUSIC the band have been incrementally changing their game. Their last record, Smother, found them introducing a more synthesizer-rooted sound, and it's an approach continued on Present Tense. • The enduring impact of Store Street on UK club culture
The UK club scene has changed hugely since THE MID noughties. The End is gone. As are The Cross, Turnmills, The Arches, Sankeys and countless more iconic VENUE . Hands in the air have been replaced by smart phones in the air, the CDJ has become a staple of the booth over the 1210 and most tech-house doesn’t sound anything like tech-house once did. But few places have had such an enduring impact in the years between then and now as Manchester’s The Warehouse Project at Store Street.Returning for its 2018 season at the end of last month (22nd September), its opening party featured Seth Troxler, Dixon, Peggy Gou, Midland, Call Super, Mall Grab and more on the buttons. Through until its New Year’s Day closing party, Store Street – which The Warehouse Project co-founder Sacha Lord has described as its “spiritual home” – welcomes parties from Underworld, Drumcode, Deadmau5, Four Tet Friends, Rush Hour and many more. But with the announcement of this year’s parties, those behind The Warehouse Project also revealed 2018 will be its last-ever season at the VENUE “With

  • Understanding Harmony Part 1
What is harmony? How do chords relate to one another? How can a chord progression build a framework for a song? In this tutorial we'll answer those questions by looking at the basic chords of a key. Melody is the most important part of the MUSIC It is the tune of the song. But harmony can add so much depth and meaning! It is the interplay of tones or chords that accompany the melody. How does harmony give weight and depth to a song melody exactly? Each chord has its own ‘colour’ or perspective, and often seems to also have a direction of travel. It takes you to the next point in the song, either with a feeling of inevitability, or alternatively with a sense of sudden unexpected shock! Some have likened this journey of tension, climax and release to crossing a bridge. The road ARCHES away from the foundation of the shoreline on one side (the home key at the beginning of the song), and takes you through a varied journey of discovery, before returning you to the bedrock at the other end of the bridge (the home key at the finish). We can understand this process much better if we begin by looking at how the basic chords of any key are constructed, and how they actually relate to each other. Major Scale Triads Let’s take a simple major scale, and stack up the 1,3 and 5 notes on top of each other to form chords. Use only the notes that are actually in that scale. These chords are called triads. You can build a triad on every note of any scale, making a total of seven chords, in this instance, in the key of C major. Let’s number them as well. We’ll use the Roman numerals commonly used in MUSIC theory

The concept album carries a lot of baggage with it. Invariably, it conjures up images of bloated, cape-wearing prog rock dinosaurs performing 20-minute solos about the summer solstice. In the ELECTRONIC MUSIC orld, it usually means that an innovative ARTIST has hit a creative block and is ‘reinventing’ themselves. In short, the term usually has negative connotations. There are some exceptions however, and Scottish producer Gareth Whitehead’s ‘The Brood’ is the latest work to  buck the tendency towards self-indulgence.Nearly four years in planning and making, as Gareth explains, it is inspired in part by his own background. “I grew up outside Glasgow and when I started to get into ELECTRONIC MUSIC n

  • Scottish Ensemble review strings surging like a North Sea gale
Arches, GlasgowShetland fiddler Chris Stout offered up some rough'n'ready Bach, while he and harpist Catriona McKay made salty work of a sea-inspired Sally Beamish pieceThat was a wee bit of Bach for you, folks. The Shetland fiddler Chris Stout had just arrived at the end of Bach's Double Concerto more or less in one piece. It's been a while since I attempted something like that, he told the audience with a sheepish grin. A polished performance of the concerto this was not, what with trains rumbling overhead, grungy basslines filtering in from the pub next door, and some seriously ropey patches in Stout's fingerwork. But it was spirited: hearty swing to the outer movements, a Largo embellished like an ancient lament, Stout's foot tapping away session-style throughout. Continue reading...

  • Londons biggest nightclub opens
Studio 338 aims to bring Ibiza-style clubbing to south-east London with its heated outside terrace and a capacity of 3,000London's biggest nightclub opened its doors on Saturday, a venue with a capacity of 3,000 promising something of the alfresco debauchery of Ibiza with an outdoor terrace incongruously sited next to the Blackwall Tunnel.Studio 338 is in Greenwich, south-east London, and has hot air pumped into the outside space to heat it up in the chilly British winter. It arrives when dance music has never been more popular while the number of superclubs in the capital has never been lower. With the exception of the evergreen Ministry of Sound at Elephant & Castle and Fabric in Farringdon, club venues had been displaced by peripatetic curators such as Broken & Uneven and London Warehouse Events (LWE), itinerant entities rotating around various semi-permanent spaces in railway arches, car parks and post-industrial shells.Studio 338 aims to change all that, though the potential stumbling block is a location far from the clubbing hotspots of Vauxhall, Peckham and east London. The arrival of 24-hour tube in 2015 will help, but Studio 338 is primarily relying on that unique terrace plus blue-chip partners to persuade enough punters to make the trip each week.Dan Perrin, 338's musical director, says the venue will feature "brands and artists that fanatical early-20s club kids would walk barefoot to Kent to go and see," citing respected US deep house crews Soul Clap and Wolf + Lamb, Berlin club Watergate, and London's Secretsundaze. Perrin says house and techno are "90% of the musical character of this place", but drum'n'bass brand Hospitality will also appear. The founder wants to remain anonymous and wouldn't disclose financial matters, but Perrin describes him as owning "specialist places in and around Bow, mostly eastern European cultural type places, if you will". Perrin sums up the club's niche as follows: "If Fabric is Berlin, this place is Ibiza or Croatia – more
