Read more about Fender Vintage Hot Rod '60s Telecaster at MusicRadar.com We take a look at one of Fender's revamped Vintage Hot Rod range of Telecasters - another marriage of new and old from the guitar giant.Innovation in the world of the solidbody electric guitar tends to fare best when it arrives on the market with STEALTH Perhaps it's because, compared with traditional orchestral instruments, our beloved plank is something of an infant, and there's still much to be said for the effectiveness of the first wave of designs in almost any modern MUSIC l context short of drop-tuned, bottom-heavy metal.Or perhaps we guitarists are mostly backward-looking, curmudgeonly types. Either way, as much as we admire the style and form of the 1950s and 60s, when you take a guitar out into the real world, there are practicalities to consider."The mere mention of Fender's American Vintage instruments unites the office in a collective swoon, but we'd be forced to admit that they are not for everyone"For example, as much as the mere mention of Fender's American Vintage instruments unites the office in a collective swoon, we'd be forced to admit, somewhat grudgingly, that they are not for everyone. Such features as thin fretwire and 184mm (7.25-inch) fingerboard radii might be examples of FMIC's painstaking efforts to make 'em like they used to, but it's a combination that's not for the faint-hearted player when high-register lead breaks come around.Recognising this, Fender launched its first Vintage Hot Rod guitars back at Winter NAMM 2007, and they immediately proved popular with players who, though still head over heels in love with the look and the sound of the company's golden era, find the slavish accuracy of the American Vintage reissues a little limiting.Last year saw The Big F revamp the Vintage Hot Rod range and throw some new models into the mix, and now there's a choice of '50s and '60s Strats and Teles as well as '60s Precision and '70s Jazz Basses. All six models draw heavy

  • Leftfield Alternative Light Source review – a masterpiece of texture
(Infectious)The world has changed in the 16 years since the release of Leftfield’s last studio album, 1999’s Rhythm and Stealth. The former duo is now a one-man band in the shape of Neil Barnes, the MUSIC industry the band succeeded in charming is moribund, and DANCE MUSIC subsumed into the mainstream partly through the band’s own success (remember the Guinness advert?) has been a busted flush for a good decade. The group were always among the real innovators of the scene with their absorption of dub and other genres and their combination of the cerebral with in-your-face bass. The new record doesn’t really break any moulds but it is a masterpiece of texture. Opener Bad Radio ends up sounding almost like fellow innovators Future Sound of London and the crunchy synth line in the break of the seven-minute Universal Everything is spine-tingling. Dark Matters builds over a submarine kick drum and marimba without you really noticing. As for standouts, the rising and filtering-up synth lines, repeated builds and impressionistic vocals from Channy Leaneagh of Polia on Little Fish should make it a live favourite; Shaker Obsession has an irresistible drive; and the lassitude, scurf and attitude of Sleaford Mods’s Jason Williamson are the making of the unsettling Head and Shoulders. • Pioneering Dance Act Returns After 16 Years
It's been 16 long years since the now solo Leftfield released their last LP dubbed 'Rhythm and Stealth' (that included Roots Manuva and Afrika Bambaataa), yet it only seems more than appropriate that an old guard returns to show off some new tricks. For those playing at home, Leftfield originate from the OG crop of British DANCE MUSIC acts that shaped a RAVE scene in the 90's. I'm talking Leftfield were slamming out gigs next to guys like Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and of course The Prodigy.Fast forward to this very day and we're welcoming a freshly cut 10 track 'Alternative Light Source'. Featuring a list of classic collaborations that include Channy Leaneagh (Poliça) and abd Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio) this album is everything and more than what I expected!!Leftfield has very wisely stuck to the roots of what made them popular with a classic UK influence that seems to remain timeless across all these surviving acts from that era. Before you get tucked into the entire album, you should have a taste of the statically magnetic and thumping TECHNO bangor

  • Across the Distance review – serene and persuasive
Cambo Garden, FifeJohn Luther Adams’ new work for 32 horn-players, which closed the East Neuk festival, made us hear the environment as much as the notes themselves“Can music resonate with the world around us, and yet still create a world of its own?” This is a typical question posed by the composer John Luther Adams, and his own music resolutely answers it: yes. JLA’s outdoor works make us hear our environment as much as the notes themselves. He calls the process “ecological listening”, and though he dislikes the term “political art” (“bad art, bad politics,” he once told me), his nature pieces are eco-activism by stealth. It’s a simple strategy and it works: the more we pay attention to our environment, the more we might care about it. Related: John Luther Adams: a force of nature Continue reading...

  • LEFTFIELD RETURN TO THE FRAY
LEFTFIELD RETURN TO THE FRAYTop ‘90s dance act to release first material in 16 years Issue:544 Leftfield, one of the biggest dance acts of the 1990s, are back! The London-based act, originally made up of Paul Daley and Neil Barnes, have just announced details of a new album and a short UK tour. They will also be playing some festivals such as Creamfields and Rockness this summer. Leftfield grew out of the early ‘90s progressive house scene in London, and when they dropped their ‘Leftism’ album in 1993 it was instantly dubbed a classic. DJ Mag named it the best dance album of all time in the mid-noughties. Leftfield took a while to follow up their masterpiece, but when ‘Rhythm Stealth’ arrived it didn’t disappoint. They split when Daley and Barnes allegedly couldn’t get on with each other any more, with Neil keeping the Leftfield name for the long term – and now Leftfield are back! An album, ‘Alternative Light Source’, is set for release in June on Infectious, with a single ‘Universal Everything’ preceding it. The technoid chugger seems to mark a real return to form. Hear it here: Collaborators on the album include TV On The Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Nottingham's Sleaford Mods. The album’s tracklisting is as follows: 01. ‘Bad Radio
’ 02. ‘Universal Everything
’ 03. ‘Bilocation
’ 04. ‘Head And Shoulders
’ 05. ‘Dark Matters’ 06. ‘Little Fish
’ 07. ‘Storms End’

  • Stealth Infrastructure
Published in collaboration with VVVNT Cell tower disguised as fir tree, Bedfordshire, UK. Photo: Dragontree. "The Critical Engineer considers any technology depended upon to be both a challenge and a threat. The greater the dependence on a technology the greater the need to study and expose its inner workings, regardless of ownership or legal provision. "             – The Critical Engineering Manifesto, 2011-2014 SIGHTINGS  My first conscious contact with telecommunications infrastructure came in the form of a telephone call that simultaneously rang for about a hundred people. It was called a party line and was common in the 80s in rural New Zealand and other areas too sparsely populated to justify a unique telephone cable to each household. Instead, the telco ran just one line out from the nearest exchange as though the whole community were a single address, and then wove it across the hills, through wooden T-poles, stitching farm to farm. It worked like this: each farm was given a ring pattern similar to a phrase of Morse Code. Our antique phone with its wooden housing and little metal bells would ring with a dozen different patterns a day, but the rule was that you'd only pick up when the call was for you. Naturally my sisters and I broke that rule once or twice, trying to keep a lid on our giggles as we lifted the wrong pattern. Though the system practically implemented wiretapping, we knew listening in on others was wrong and, apart from the odd prank, our Party Line worked quite well. As far as I knew the whole world was wired that way, that telecommunication anywhere would imply an open infrastructure with a contract of trust at the center. Looking at the Party Line from a system design perspective, you could say the filtering and addressing workload was pushed onto us to cut costs on switching infrastructure. But we didn't think of it like that. It seemed no more work than answering to your name. Years later, I was in a convenience store in Auckland with

Slowly, remnants of songs he’d scratched together and sometimes demoed with the Velvets were finished and then recorded for his unremarkable solo debut. But one song he didn’t polish off, Satellite of Love, survived to his second solo album, 1972’s Transformer , recorded with RCA labelmates David Bowie and Mick Ronson. The original demo is enjoyable, but the final studio recording benefits from a dazzling glam rock makeover, full of luminous piano arrangements, handclapping, and some incredible backing vocals from producer Bowie. “I loved the [backing vocals] when he did them on my record,” wrote Reed in 2003. “It’s not the kind of part I ever would have come up with, but David hears those parts, plus he’s got a freaky voice and he can go up that high and do that. It’s very, very beautiful.” Continue reading...

  • Peter Van Hoesen It Is A Very Western Approach To Put The Individual At The Centre Of Things
In Peter Van Hoesen, you find the best of both worlds. Born in one of Europe's most revered nations of techno, Belgium, and living in the mecca of techno, Berlin; Peter is considered to be one of the genres true selectors. I happened to witness his recent set at Strawberry Fields festival, and it was hands down the best set I heard there, perhaps best set I've heard in a very long while.Peter's latest offering of work to techno is a new project titled Stealth, a compilation of fourteen tracks of his and people who he works closely with. To find out more about whats going on in the life of PVH, we shot over a few questions to pick his brain.S: You’ve been working on a new project titled Stealth, a fourteen track compilation of your own productions and others from people who you’ve been working with closely. How was this idea conceived?PVH: Stealth was built on two ideas. First of all the idea of a compilation or mix album was something I wanted to do for a year or two already. Secondly, I noticed that the new material I was making myself could eventually lead to a new solo album, but I was not really interested in that at the time. So the ideal outcome for me seemed to combine those two concepts. The fact that the artists who contributed are all people with whom I have a personal connection makes it extra special for me. I’m very happy with the result.S: “I believe less and less in the artist as a solo subject, whereby the ego of the artist seems to be the driving force.” Why do you think that ego has become the driving force behind an artist? PVH: That’s a very interesting question but also a very complex one to answer. It is a very western approach to put the individual at the centre of things, and to look at the world in a dualistic fashion. There’s the person, and then there’s the outside world. Object and subject. They are perceived as two different things. That leads to a very strong notion of individuality.
