Australian anthems Icehouse Great Southern Land
No one had attempted to evoke the Australian landscape with synthesisers until Icehouse came up with this shimmering 1982 classicMany great Australian songs couldn't sound more different to the circumstances in which they were dreamed up and none more so than Icehouse's 1982 classic Great Southern Land. While the song evokes the vast emptiness of the nation's countryside, it was written and recorded in frontman Iva Davies's living room in the inner Sydney suburb of Leichhardt, right under the airport flightpath. Davies frequently had to stop the tape as the roar of the engines made the house's foundations rattle.Orginally named Flowers, the band started life in Sydney in the late '70s. They played the beer-barn circuit during the punk era, developing a style that was part-Roxy Music, part Ziggy-era Bowie. In 1980 they signed to Regular Records, soon changing their name to Icehouse (after their debut album) to avoid confusion with a Scottish band at the time called the Flowers. Anyone will tell you its a prisoner island,Hidden in the summer for a million yearsSo you listen to the land,It will tell you storyA story of a journey ended long ago Theyre gonna betray you,Theyre gonna forget you,Are you gonna let them take you over that way? Brian Eno and Karl Hyde make album
The Underworld singer felt like he was 'nine years old again' working with Eno on Someday World, which features guests from Coldplay and Roxy MusicBrian Eno and Underworld's Karl Hyde are to release an album together, entitled Someday World. The two MUSIC ans previously collaborated on the track Beebop Hurry for the compilation album Athens, but this is the first time they've completed a full LP together."I had a big collection of beginnings sitting around waiting for something to galvanise them into life, to make them more than just experiments," said Eno, "That something turned out to be Karl Hyde."Someday World features nine songs and a plethora of guest names, including Coldplay's drummer Will Champion, Roxy Music's Andy Mackay and south London soul singer Don-E. Both Eno and Hyde will contribute vocals to their compositions. The Underworld man enthused about the pair's working methods: "It's a bit like being nine years old again. You have no idea what you've just been given, the record button has been pressed, and you're on. And then these unlikely patterns start to happen. The biggest surprise was discovering we both had a love of Afrobeat – cyclical MUSIC based in live playing. When Brian played me these early tracks, it was, 'Oh my God, this is home! Can I borrow a guitar?'"Someday World is due for release in May on Warp Records.Brian EnoUnderworldElectronic MUSIC op

Giorgio Moroder – 10 of the best
From inventing Eurodisco and hi-NRG with Donna Summer to Oscar-winning ELECTRO ic soundtracks and a glorious conversation with Daft PunkGiovanni Giorgio Moroder’s dream of rock stardom in the conventional sense was never truly realised, but once the schlager-meister inadvertently discovered the Moog, he was on the road to immortality as one of pop’s most important innovators. The Italian’s MUSIC l career began 49 years ago in Berlin, and he scored a moderate hit with Looky Looky three years later in 1969, and then another with Son of My Father in 1971. Chicory Tip recorded the latter song in 1972, which went to No 1 in the UK charts, becoming the first hit record with a prominent synth (played by Roxy Music producer Chris Thomas). Roxy Music 10 of the best
There are two Roxy Musics – and our 10 deals only with the first, those abrasive MUSIC l insurgents, not the smooth balladeers of later yearsAs mission statements go, the very first Roxy Music song on their self-titled debut album couldn’t be any more effusive or less idiosyncratic. Not since the Jimi Hendrix Experience had any one band sounded this good playing over one another in an almost competitive manner, though the glaring difference was that Hendrix’s trio were virtuosos to a man. Aside from steady rhythm powerhouse Paul Thompson, it’s fair to say the Roxy of 1972 were MUSIC ans finding their way, and Brian Eno on the VCS3 synth notoriously couldn’t really play a note (he still can’t, not that that’s hurt his career any). The gloriously egalitarian nature of pop means ability can come in a variety of different guises, and County Durham’s Bryan Ferry, with his trembling voice, turned apparent shortcomings into strengths. He also approached the serious art of songwriting with a dadaist playfulness, in opposition to the prevailing trend in the early 70s of earnest confessional singer/songwriters. Bryan also had a lovely head of hair, and still does. Re-make/Re-model is a relentless, pulverising, sonic car crash of a song, and one of the cars in the pile up bears the number plate “CPL 593H” (sung repeatedly as the song’s only chorus), apparently driven by a beautiful woman Ferry noticed in the rear-view mirror on the way to the studio. The outro features a post-modernist smash and grab, the band chopping up bits of Richard Wagner, Duane Eddy and the Beatles and mixing them all together in their own irreverent MUSIC l
Jack White review – a wild tightrope walk across thrash funk and hiphop
The Garage, LondonThe former White Stripes frontman twists up and melts down material old and new – and channels Roxy Music along the waySome mischaracterise Jack White as a dad-rock revivalist in deadening thrall to tradition and craft, but this does a disservice to just how electric, wilful and weird an ARTIST he truly is. This is a man who effected a rock revolution armed with limited MUSIC l elements, a monochromatic wardrobe and an ex-wife he pretended was his sister, and who tonight risks the ire of millennials by banning smartphones, to have the crowd’s full attention. Doing things straight has never been a part of the plan. This explains his gonzo new album Boarding House Reach, which adds wild funk, offbeat gospel and, most unexpectedly, hip-hop to his palette and which, against fierce odds, mostly works. One of a handful of intimate gigs White is playing this week in Los Angeles, New York and London to celebrate the album’s release, tonight sees him debut a number of Boarding House Reach tunes, along with highlights from his back catalogue, adapted for his new band. Visiting the Famed Cheiron Studios in Stockholm Where Pop History Was Made
A few weeks ago, I was in Sweden to dive into the local pop scene and I finally had the opportunity to tour the famed Cheiron Studios in Stockholm. Now called Roxy Recordings, this is the studio complex that was founded by the late Denniz PoP in the early '90s. Cheiron became the breeding ground of some of the greatest pop music ever recorded. Following PoP's passing in 1998 , Max Martin took over the studio and engineered a sound at Cheiron that turned artists like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and N*Sync into mega-acts. In fact, it was in this studio that Britney Spears recorded Baby One More Time and most of her debut album. Fans used to camp out when Backstreet Boys recorded here and they had to install a secret elevator so the group could enter and exit the building without issue. Pop magic was made here and I felt so lucky to go inside and see the studios. It was very special to be in the same room that young Britney used to record her first songs alongside Max Martin. If only I could have been a fly on the wall back then.

Bryan Ferry on how Roxy Music invented a new kind of pop We were game for anything
With their thrillingly strange 1972 debut, Roxy Music announced themselves as a band that were unlike anyone else. The singer looks back at how they created a new kind of music – out of Stax, oboes and Marilyn Monroe More than 45 years ago, a new group released their first album. They didn’t wear denim, nor had they, apparently, paid their dues. Indeed, their heavily stylised presentation – a model posed archly on the cover in a 1950s pastiche, the musicians inside clad in leopardskin and leather with styled quiffs – could not have been more opposed to the rock modes of the day. “Is this a recording session or a cocktail party?” inquired Ferry’s friend Simon Puxley in the liner notes. Before you even got to the music, the record cover was a gauntlet thrown down – an explosion of glamour in a wasteland of faded blue cotton.“The clothes we were wearing at that time would have put off quite a large chunk of people,” reflects Bryan Ferry. “What I liked about the American bands, the Stax label and Motown, they were into presentation and show business, mohair suits, quite slick. And the cover art, I thought of all the American pop culture icons, Marilyn Monroe: selling cigarettes or beer with a glamorous image. But it was a bit off-kilter as well; there was something a bit strange about it, futuristic as well as retro. All that, instead of a picture of the band, in a dreary street, looking rather sullen. Which was the norm.” Continue reading...
DISCHAAAGEEE – “Undue Score”
Wasting no time with pulsing synths and expressive vocals, Undue Score catches on quickly with a catchy electro-pop strut. The release comes from DISCHAAAGEEE, a singer/songwriter from Fukuoka, Japan. Citing artists like Talking Heads, New Order, and Roxy Music as influences, DISCHAAAGEEE shows a confident vocal nonchalance in the verses typical of such an era. []

UK Punk and Reggae legend Don Letts picks his 10 ultimate Notting Hill Carnival tracks
Don Letts is a true legend of UK punk. A filmmaker, musician and DJ, the London-born icon has stood at the helm of the country’s most vital scene for over four decades, as both a documentarian and participant.Known for bringing dub and reggae sounds into the punk sphere during his peerless DJ sets at The Roxy and forming the post-punk outfit Big Audio Dynamite with The Clash’s Mick Jones, Letts’ influence cannot be understated. As a child of the Windrush generation, whose father came to the UK from Jamaica after the Second World War, Letts has been acquainted with the social, political and cultural significance and joyous power of Notting Hill Carnival his whole life. With that keen understanding, as well as an encyclopedic knowledge of the annual event’s musical trajectory from the Trinidadian and Tobagonian calypso sound to Jamaican sound system culture and beyond, we asked the punk luminary to pick ten tracks that, for him, define Carnival.Sister Nancy ‘Bam Bam’“An old school reggae classic that reminds me of the time sound systems ruled Carnival in the mid seventies - back then there were hundreds.”Half Pint ‘Greetings’“A rally cry with a wicked bass line that’s an invite to all tribes to come and partake in the festivities”Cronixx ‘Alpha Omega’“One of my current Jamaican favourites with the riddim twins, Sly and Robbie, in full effect - a modern take on the roots vibes that first drew me to Carnival in my early teens” Chaka Demus Pliers ‘Tease Me’“This one’s for the ladies ‘cause once they’re movin’ and groovin’ everything else will take care of itself”Congo Natty ‘UK Allstars’“A great tune that perfectly captures the heyday of jungle when it crashed Carnival in the early ‘90s by paying respect to the pioneers of the form"Bunji Carlin, Kubiyashi Walsh Fire ‘Chicken and Dumpling’“....and if you can resist all the culinary delights on offer across the two days of Carnival you're a slimmer being than me!"UK punk legend and iconic dub and reggae DJ Don Letts charts
