Bear Hands You’ll Pay for This review – the notsodifficult third album
(Spensive Sounds)In an age of HYPE then quickly discarded BLOG sphere bands, Bear Hands are a cheering anachronism. They formed in 2006 but first found real success in 2014; their hit single Giants was a reward for resilience. You might assume that their songs are slowburners too, but the opposite is true. Their third album is dominated by hooky, disposable guitar and synth-pop, well suited to indie DANCEFLOOR ,
Jason Swinscoe ‘I’m not doing this to make a pop song that’s on Radio 1 for two weeks’
The leader of Cinematic Orchestra on writing songs in his dreams, shelving a whole album and why he takes his job very seriouslyThe Cinematic Orchestra were created in 1999 by the DJ Jason Swinscoe. He works closely with longtime collaborator and co-writer Dom Smith, whom he met when both worked for the independent label Ninja Tune. An ever-evolving collective that expand to a 12-piece band for live shows, the Cinematic Orchestra have an epic, widescreen sound, fusing elements of jazz, classical and cutting-edge ELECTRONICA They have sold out the Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House and their single To Build a Home has been streamed more than 60m times. The band have released three critically acclaimed studio albums including their 1999 debut, Motion; their fourth – and their first in nine years – is due early next year.To Believe is the title of both your new single and your forthcoming album. What kind of belief are you dealing with? It’s not so much about personal belief, it’s more about putting a question out there: what do we believe in? With everything that’s going on in the world, whether it’s Syria or the US election or the Jungle camp, what’s interesting to me is where culture and society is, at this point in time. Production Style Guide Techno Pt 1 – History Sound Design
Techno is more than a genre – it’s an institution. Combining the avant-garde ELECTRONICA that was coming out of Europe in the early ‘70s and ‘80s with the electric funk and post-disco beamed from Detroit’s underground radio stations, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson began to create ...Continue reading
Premiere Yotto Second Life
Yotto — aka Otto Yliperttula — kicks off March with a slice of smooth, uplifting ELECTRONICA titled 'Second Life' from his new two-tracker for Joris Voorn's Green label. The Finnish producer is already making 2018 his year, with a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix landing back in January and regular support from tastemakers, Annie Mac and Pete Tong.Following on from an outing on Anjunadeep, his new 'Chemicals' / 'Second Life' release marks another step on his climb to the top. Our personal favourite, 'Second Life' is a slow, proggy affair in the vein of Denis Sulta and George FitzGerald, building up through heady, uplifting synths and pads to a noisy crescendo — perfect for losing yourself amongst the lasers!"Second Life took me a long time," Otto tells DJ Mag. "I originally made it almost a year ago trying out a new synth I had just aquired. I played it a few times and went back to the studio, added some strings and it ended up turning into a very emotional piece of MUSIC underpinned by a clubby kick drum."Listen to the track below and grab a copy now from Beatport.Plus, catch Yotto playing alongside The Black Madonna, Claptone, Ellen Allien, Alan Walker and more at DJ Mag's annual Miami Pool Party at the Surfcomber on Wednesday 21st March. radiostringquartet In Between review – rich colours and seductive grooves
(Jazzland)Vienna’s charismatic radio.string.quartet have shown how much they understand about jazz spontaneity and urban groovemaking as well as classical perfectionism on covers of John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra and the MUSIC of the late Joe Zawinul in recent years. Now at Norway’s Jazzland label, with that imaginative operation’s pop-jazz and ELECTRONICA savvy founder Bugge Wesseltoft co-producing, matters have taken a more AMBIENT turn
If it moves me to tears Ive achieved what I wanted natures songwriter Erland Cooper
With geese as backing singers and a thousand children singing like starlings, the MUSIC an is sending his emotive ‘sonic postcards’ from Orkney to LondonThe rain lashes down, the wind whistles and a skein of pink-footed geese fly overhead, honking in the twilight, as Erland Cooper’s concert begins. Cley Marshes nature reserve on the Norfolk coast is an unusual place for a gig, but the perfect stage for an evening of MUSIC inspired by the birds of Orkney.Cooper, known for the folk-rock of Erland and the Carnival and the more experimental soundscapes of the Magnetic North, migrated to new terrain for his debut solo album Solan Goose, released last year. With its combination of contemporary classical, AMBIENT and
Public Service Broadcasting keep calm and carry on
This tweed-sporting duo took Mr Cholmondley-Warner to the DANCEFLOOR with debut Inform-Educate-Entertain. But is their found-sound ELECTRONICA a formula with built-in limitations? It's a wet morning in London when one of the men behind Public Service Broadcasting comes splashing through the rain into a restaurant housed in a massive old grain store just north of King's Cross station. John, as he introduces himself, is unremarkable in an old pair of jeans and a white shirt, undone at the collar. He orders a pot of tea. Normally at this time he's taking his tea to the freezing GARAGE that

Oneohtrix Point Never the warped genius behind Uncut Gemss spinechilling score
His soundtrack shredded audiences’ nerves. Now producer Daniel Lopatin is using radio to bring Trump’s America togetherIt has been a peculiar 2020 for many of us, but Daniel Lopatin’s has been odder than most. In January, the warped ELECTRONICA that he makes under his pseudonym Oneohtrix Point Never soundtracked a hit Netflix movie, the nerve-shredding Adam Sandler thriller Uncut Gems. On 8 March, he tasted the primetime life, playing a song he had written with the Weeknd on Saturday Night Live. Daniel Craig introduced them, a few weeks before the new Bond film was due to be released. “I was shitting bricks if I can be totally candid,” the slightly less famous Daniel says.Fifteen days later, Covid-19 locked down New York. Stuck in his flat, his studio out of bounds, Lopatin had to make MUSIC in his bedroom like he did when his recording career began. Granted, life had changed since his 2007 debut, Betrayed in the Octagon: he’d spearheaded a genre, vaporwave, by narcotically slowing down excerpts of well-known songs, and collaborated with David Byrne, FKA twigs and Iggy Pop. He still had a poky bedroom, though. “If I’d pushed my chair back making MUSIC
I Break Horses Warnings review – more woozy synthscapes
(Bella Union)Having started out as a My Bloody Valentine-indebted shoegaze duo, I Break Horses had become a solo vehicle for Swedish singer-songwriter Maria Lindén by the time of 2014’s rather more ELECTRONICA influenced second album, Chiaroscuro. The six years since have been notable chiefly for a series of false starts: collaborations that didn’t come off, two years’ work lost on a crashed hard drive. But despite a new creative foil in producer Chris Coady (Beach House, TV on the Radio), the long gestation period of this third album hasn’t brought about any quantum leaps in style: Warnings majors in the sort of gently woozy homemade synthscapes that defined its predecessor. The record is most effective when Lindén sounds more animated, as on I’ll Be the Death of You and the nimble, propulsive, Kraftwerk-influenced Neon Lights. Unfortunately these moments are overshadowed by lengthier excursions that give longueurs a bad name. The opener, Turn, details the aftermath of a relationship gone sour, but the cloyingly tinkling synths and funereal pace make its nine ponderous minutes feel like an endurance test. Lead single Death Engine is similarly overegged, and the three instrumental interstices anaesthetise the palate rather than cleanse it. There’s the kernel of a good album here – but it’s no more than that. Continue reading...
Scuba Returns To Australia For A Nation Wide Tour
Paul Rose, aka Scuba, has had an interesting electronic music jounrey from his beggings to now. He found early recognition in the UK dub-step scene in 2003 and has since transversed across the electronic music landscape, covering house, abstract electronica and finally moving onto techno.Paul's most impressive accolade is his record label Hotflush Recordings which has been running since 2003 and reflects the Rose's own musical journey, starting with dubstep and evolving over time to where it is now. It's doubly impressive to think that Paul has run the label while maintaining a consistance musical output and touring schedule.Late 2016 marks Scuba's return to the land down under with a series of shows all around the country. Mark Radcliffe electronica god Im not just some radio bloke having a dabble
The DJ has made an album inspired by untranslatable words, recorded with a bloke he met in the pub called Paul Langley. So what does ‘boketto’ mean?Mark Radcliffe and Paul Langley are sipping tea in central Manchester. The former is the much-loved radio star; the latter is something of a mystery. “Good, the less said the better,” Langley says from behind his spectacles and pot of Earl Grey. However, I do know he once made an EP in an outfit called Rack-It! “That was with Martyn Walsh from Inspiral Carpets,” he laughs. “He said, ‘You wanna do a track called Sex on Acid – that’ll annoy people.’ And it did.”Radcliffe and Langley are, they tell me, “soon to be legendary”. This will be in the guise of UNE, the name they have given themselves. The pair have made Lost, an album of lovely, plaintive electronica over which Radcliffe sings. They met five years ago in the Builder’s Arms in Knutsford, Cheshire. Radcliffe, new to the area, asked locals which pub was dog-friendly. This led to dog-walk encounters with Langley, and the pair were soon bantering over pints, about music and Manchester City. When I heard Paul's music, I thought: 'This is surprisingly good' Related: Mark Radcliffe ‘surprised’to lose BBC show during cancer Lost is out on 18 October. UNE play the Old Courts, Wigan, 3 October, and more dates before Christmas. Mark Radcliffe’s book, Crossroads, is published by Canongate. Continue reading...
