Point Blank at IMS Ibiza Andrea Oliva DJ Masterclass
Point Blank’s coverage of the International Music Summit in Ibiza last month culminates with the DJ Masterclass they hosted with Andrea Oliva, after videos on the Point Blank x Pioneer DJ Accelerator Programme winner Ambian playing at the Hard Rock in support of Flashmob and Seth Troxler, and DJ Ravine reporting from some of the parties at the event. Take a look at some of their DJ courses to see how you too could learn some wizardry on the decks.Andrea Oliva is known worldwide today, with past gigs on the biggest stages as diverse as Coachella and Panorama Bar and a whole host of Elrow parties. Everyone starts somewhere, however, and we learn here that he started out with a pair of belt-driven decks and Numark’s extremely basic two-channel mixer (which, let’s face it, is the beginner’s mixer of champions). We also learn some of his first inspirations to take his mixing as far technically as he could, including Erick Morillo and Little Louis Vega, leading him to his affection for four-deck mixing as demonstrated here. After the show incorporating the four decks, Oliva gets into some of the technical nitty-gritty of his set, beginning with his RMX-1000 from Pioneer DJ. The effects unit can add impact when needed and spices up looped sections simply and easily. Simplicity isn’t necessarily something Oliva goes for, however, favouring a “chaotic” approach to playlisting and planning to help allow a more natural creative process. We also learn how important a rite of passage the warm-up set can be and how experience and risk-taking are the cornerstones of a constantly improving DJ for Oliva.IMS Ibiza is a massive event in the DANCE MUSIC calendar, drawing people from all over the globe to the white isle. Delegates in attendance are entitled to a 10% discount on course at Point Blank Ibiza, which is now enrolling for classes this summer. The courses on offer teach the basics of both DJing and Production, suited to your level, and there is another option to focus on DJing and

Berghain’s Panorama Bar has installed a new soundsystem First look
Panorama Bar, Berghain’s smaller space, has installed a new soundsystem.German-based and relatively unknown hi-fi company, Studt-Akustik, are responsible for the new system, which differs to techno Mecca Berghain’s Funktion-One system in that it has been developed specifically for the smaller space. The custom system features a 4-point linear array with six additional high-performance subwoofers, allowing for vertical stackability. It has also been built to adapt to the non-uniform aspects of Panorama Bar, which is made up of glass, concrete and tiles, meaning there will be no distortion in sound.Check out Studt-Akustik’s S 26510 L speaker, used as part of Panorama Bar’s new soundsystem, below.(Photo: Studt-Akustik words: Oliver Payne)Media: Bergahin.jpgPanorama BarStudt-AkustikHint: it’s not a Funktion-One…Navigation Section:NewsSection Priority:Priority 1Broadcast Date:Wednesday, August 30, 2017 - 15:00
This man analysed Berghain’s stats so you don’t have to
The Numbers of Berghain is a website by Israeli designer Artiom Dashinsky that analyses the statistics of Berghain’s bookings over the past seven years. You can check out some of its findings below.Dashinsky took the data from the Berghain website, and split the results out by floor of the Berlin mega venue – so they are given for Berghain, Panorama Bar, Lab.oratory and Säule.“One of the things that makes Berghain amazing is the great artist curation,” Dashinsky says on the site. “I find myself going to Berghain's website and looking at the listings just to discover great techno and house music artists. I ended up analyzing the listings to find out who are the most booked DJs, who is trending and lots of other super-interesting data.”The stats show that the most booked artist at across all of Berghain’s floors is Berlin-based DJ, Boris (with 96 shows in the seven years).Berghain itself saw most sets from revered techno selector Norman Nodge, whilst Panorama Bar’s decks were most frequented by Sammy Dee.Other stats show Berghain’s top trending artists and the most booked DJs of 2016. Quick listen – love the new Jimmy Edgar ULTRAMAJIC sound
In the dark, damp swamp that is the stream of dance music that press get in their inbox, Jimmy Edgar has consistently been a rainbow-colored lighthouse. Apart from the tropically-hued surrealist work of Pilar Zeta literally making that true, Jimmy has been an aesthetic compass at the helm of his ULTRAMAJIC label. Basically, stuff this label puts out is worth listening. (Ditto their label showcases theres a Friday morning I found myself at Panorama Bar when they were turning the lights on. Thursday is the new oh never mind.) What I like about the latest direction is, you get pared-down ...

Cassy Donna
After spending the majority of her career behind the booth, internationally renowned DJ Cassy is stepping into the spotlight with her debut LP, Donna.
Cassy (Catherine Britton) is a celebrated DJ that has delighted audiences around the globe with her taste-making techno for over 20 years. Born in England and raised in Austria, she was drawn to music at an early age. Spurred on by her mentor Electric Indigo, Cassy started DJing in her late 20s and quickly made a name for herself in underground electronic music circles. The rest, they say, is history. Since getting her start in the business, she's held residencies in some of the hottest clubs and cities, including Panorama Bar in Belgium, Rex Club in Paris, Trouw in Amsterdam and Circo Loco in Ibiza.
But with Donna, Cassy invites fans and listeners directly into her intimate world. The album, produced by King Britt, is the result of "six years of stop start," amid a number of personal challenges and triumphs. Throughout the LP, she effortlessly oscillates between different genres, throwing in techno, soul, dance, RB and downtempo. (Her worldly inclinations can be traced back to her parents, whose father is from Barbados and mother is from Vienna). Donna is eclectic, moving, emotive and true to Cassy's roots. Her vocals, which dominate the album, recall the same soulful edge of singer-songwriter Sade.
The real triumph here, though, is the sense of creative freedom that pervades the album. As her press release notes, Donna "proves Cassy has much more than just effective club music up her sleeve." She isn't afraid to be vulnerable, to experiment or fail or — most importantly — dig deep. Perhaps what resonates most are the artist's own thoughts articulated during the prelude to "Back": "You should know by now, there's no point in looking back."
Donna clearly showcases that Cassy isn't in the business of looking back — only forward.
The Black Madonna DJ Mag UK cover feature
It’s a Sunday in 2015 on the third day of UK festival Field Maneuvers, a back to basics ‘dirty little rave’ held in a eld just outside of London. Having wrapped up an afternoon where the main stage has been moved outside into the blazing sunshine, the action is shifting back under canvas, where The Black Madonna is set to warm up for Panorama Bar resident Nick Höppner and Glaswegian heroes Optimo. It’s only been two years since she played her first gig outside of America, riding on a reputation as the booker and resident DJ at Chicago’s iconic Smartbar, and she’s still nervous about how to proceed, jaded final night ravers slow to bid farewell to the September sun’s last gasp of summer and come inside. Then she starts. Her set begins with slow irresistible funk, the sound she started DJing on college radio while studying music in her native Kentucky around the turn of the Millennium. The cosmic rush of Rah Band’s ‘Messages From The Stars’ adds an electronic edge, and the tent begins to surge. Then in slides Wham’s ‘Everything She Wants’, washing away all the emotional grime and fatigue of the last 48 hours. Emboldened, she switches gear for take off, Mia Dora’s acid-bubbling ‘Un.Sub’ paving the way for a finale of raw jacking house. It’s gloriously uplifting, educating and over owing with fun: in short, everything her reputation promised.By now, almost everyone has their first defining memory of hearing The Black Madonna, aka Marea Stamper, play. From Dekmantel and Parklife to closing Sonar, she’s a festival fixture. Last year, London club XOYO booked her We Still Believe party, which shares its name with her label, for a 13-week run as part of its resident series. Yet it’s not only this behind-the-decks ubiquity that has marked her out. Finding her own teenage sanctuary from bullying in the Midwest’s ’90s rave scene, she’s become a force seeking to correct what has gone awry in electronic music since its idealistic beginnings, from addressing the huge gender inequality

Concubine Kingfisher
Back together after their self-titled, JUNO-nominated debut, Concubine (aka Rick Bull and Noah Pred) dive deep on this three-track EP, working in a number of styles without losing focus or taking too many left turns.
"Kingfisher" is anchored by a woozy bass line that drives the bottom end and incessant hi-hats that cut through the mix, while understated synth melodies and a house-y vocal sample pull everything together. Born out of a jam session during soundcheck during their first appearance at Berlin's Panorama Bar, "PBJ" captures the forceful but trippy vibe found on their debut and ramps it up a notch. "Drowning" may be the most concentrated version of Concubine's style on the EP, honing into the space between low-slung rhythms and melodic techno. Putting an emphasis on maximizing the impact of each element, "Drowning" builds tension and mood using a concise approach.
Built from a refined sound palette, Kingfisher isn't about reinvention, but rather a thoughtful summary of what makes Concubine's approach in the studio so compelling.
