Classic Rocker Tom Petty Weighs In On EDM it’s a drug party
Although we have a soft spot for Tom Petty and his band (all classic rock for that matter), we're a little confused why he's throwing his 2c into the EDM debate with some rather generalised comments made in an interview with Radio.com.In speaking with the ONLINE MUSIC STREAMING station Tom came out firing taking shots at Electric Daisy Carnival and the culture of 'EDM';Watch people play records? That’s stupid. You couldn’t pay me to go. I’m not oversimplifying it. That’s what’s going on. I don’t think it would be any fun without the drugs. It’s a drug party. You take that many kids to Vegas in the summer, what could go wrong? I knew it as soon as I saw the ad. I went, ‘Ooh, dead people.’ Do you need the money so bad that you’ll put some kid’s life at risk?
His comments understandably managed to make their way over to the Insomniac camp with owner Pasquale Rotella throwing a clever response back at the "Heartbreaker" while managing to steer clear of any drug connotations and going as far as inviting Mr Petty along to an event to party with his mum;"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about records, DJs and DANCE MUSIC including Tom Petty. We’re living in a very ELECTRO ic

Beatport Freezes Payments To Labels Offers Up Crummy Streaming Percentages
Beatport have really stepped in it after freezing payments to labels following the re-privatisation of SFX Entertainment, the online music stores parent company after it's float on the share market dropped the companies value and following buy back by CEO Robert Sillerman..Although only temporary all labels big and small have missed out on recent payments for the past three months and won't see any cash flow for another "few weeks" according to a letter sent to rights holders by MBW.Most larger labels with deeper pockets will be able to handle the hiccup but smaller labels who's revenue can account up to 90% digitally will really hurt and potentially derail future releases.Beatport has also taken a swipe at Soundcloud who are currently battling the majors by allowing users to upload and monetise their original content on the platform which all sounds positive but the drawback? A crummy 5% from all rights including "mechanical royalties, public performance monies, or other music publishing monies" to the composer. There's also the ability to upload mixes in which users can take 10% income from the same stipulations as unique tracks which is a pretty small sum from streams or use by Beatport or it's affiliates ie random track used in promo video could net the composer a tiny sum versus licensing a track from a bigger artist. All in all an interesting crossroad Beatport find themselves at.
How Technology Has Changed The Online Musical Marketplace
The music industry is in a state of flux. Technology has changed the way musicians play and how engineers produce music, but most of the impact can be measured in how listeners consume and discover music. But what are the main technologies and platforms, who drives these trends and how has the business end held up? Heres a look at how technology has changed the way people listen, buy, sell and discover music.
Machine Learning
With the advent of music streaming services like Spotify and Google Play Music, big data has the means to determine what consumers enjoy and can extrapolate those analytics to better construct online listening preferences. These music apps are among the most popular, though theyre not the only ones on the market. And with endless options, consumers naturally gravitate toward services that best serve their interests.
Indeed, users want a music service that can recommend new music based on their listening preferences. This intelligence is exemplified in Google Play Musics Im feeling lucky radio feature, which compiles users music selection history and, like Pandora, then identifies similar artists to form a playlist. These streaming services also offer downloadable premium options that let users download their favorite tunes. While microSD cards may seem obsolete for many users, the Samsung Galaxy S7 offers a microSD slot so users can store their music without the need to delete apps from their device.
Music Services and Discovery
While Spotify is the most popular music service on the market, there are many others hot on their heels. For those who live abroad, Deezer is one of the few music services like Spotify that works in Canada. Similar to Spotify, Deezer has a free option and two levels of premium content: one features a mini app for $4.99 a month and the other a complete optimized app for $6.99 a month.
Google Play Music has removed its social network functionality. Instead, the program relies exclusively on users prior music choices. The first,
Amazons Contract Reveals Plans To Radically Lower Streaming Music Royalties
By Rachel Bailey of the Sonicbids Blog. [OpEd] Jeff Bezos’s online mega-store, Amazon, is the Walmart of the internet. In the two decades since its launch, it has positioned itself as the low-price leader of the web and expanded to become a clearinghouse for all manner of media, gadgetry, and other ephemera. But what many of Amazon’s customers don’t know is that they allegedly achieve those low prices through tactics that bully producers into agreeing to terms that compromise their ability to profit and stay in business. And now that they’re turning their eye toward music streaming, musicians have cause...
House music Tim Ashleys watching and listening highlights
This week, our critic cues up Opera North’s podcast, takes in Ryedale’s streaming festival and revisits an archived Proms performance with Riccardo ChaillyI’ve been enjoying the Ryedale festival this week, which has moved online, streaming one concert a day from beautiful North Yorkshire venues on its new RyeStream platform. There are lovely things here. Soprano Rowan Pierce, singing by candlelight with pianist Christopher Glynn at All Saints’ Church in Helmsley, gives us a lockdown programme that opens with Purcell’s O Solitude and closes with the quiet optimism of Strauss’s Morgen! Isata Kanneh-Mason places Beethoven alongside Barber and Gershwin in a compelling recital from the same venue, while there’s a concert by the South African cellist-singer-composer Abel Selaocoe that juxtaposes African songs with riffs on Bach, astonishingly performed and utterly mesmerising. In the Castle Howard chapel, meanwhile, baroque violinist Rachel Podger enthusiastically introduces and plays Biber, Vilsmayr and Bach. The castle’s long gallery is the venue for a superb recital by Matthew Hunt and Tim Horton, which flanks Jörg Widmann’s witty solo clarinet Fantasie with works for clarinet and piano by Schumann – the Fantasiestücke, ravishingly played – and John Ireland. The festival is available free on demand or by donation until 16 August. Continue reading...

Bandcamp’s feefree Fridays to continue into 2021
Bandcamp has pledged to continue its fee-free Fridays in 2021 to support artists whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.Waiving its revenue share for all sales taken one Friday each month to allow 100% of proceeds to go to creators, the online music store has paid out over $40 million to artists and labels since the scheme first started in March - thanks to participation from almost 800,000 fans. Acknowledging that it may be several months until live performance revenue makes a return and musicians still need to pay rent, the artist-centered scheme will now continue until May 7th 2021. A new poll showed that 82% of musicians earned less than £200 from streaming service throughout the whole of 2019. On Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of buyers' money will reach the artist and label after payment processor fees - and they’ll still receive an average of 82% from Bandcamp purchases on any other day of the month. DJ Mag launched a weekly roundup of the most vital Bandcamp releases in solidarity with the artists and labels impacted through the pandemic: find the most recent roundup here. We encourage you to check out Blackbandcamp.info - an expansive, crowd-sourced list of Black artists and music on Bandcamp. Read our feature about Black Bandcamp here. DIGITALLY IMPORTED STREAMING SERVICE
DIGITALLY IMPORTED STREAMING SERVICEDigitally Importeds full-blown dance music listening experience online
Issue:545Internet streaming services are changing the way dance music is enjoyed by legions of dance music fans across the globe, offering a wealth of shows and a 24-hour listening experience that captures the vibe of the dance music community from one centralised location.
Digitally Imported are one company leading the charge in this online arena, however, until recently, they've existed more as an underground, word-of-mouth service than in-your-face providers such as Spotify and Deezer.
The service has been around for quite a while as a digital internet radio broadcaster used by only a small section of the dance music scene. However, recent developments have seen them revamp and remodel themselves to be more than just an internet radio broadcaster with a multi-faceted service that aims to unify the dance music community.
First and foremost, Digitally Imported offer a rather cool streaming service — some would say similar to the other online streaming services already found on the web. However, DI directly targets the electronic music fan with content put together by an army of loyal dance music devotees, meaning that the selection of music on offer is always of the highest order.
This is one of the unique provisions of DI as they use a team of curators across all of their music channels, covering a wide range of genres to ensure that the musical content is top-notch.
Big plansSpeaking with the guys at Digitally Imported, it is obvious that they have big plans for the service, offering more than just a streamed listening experience. Recently implemented is a feature that allows on-demand access to previously aired shows and exclusive content.
The next big thing is the opportunity for listeners to buy their favourite tracks direct from DI rather than from another digital music provider as part of their three-pronged approach — a strategy that ensures all your
