New Artist Model Approach To Musician Websites Free Online Workshop
More than simply a vehicle for MUSIC sales an ARTIST s website can (and should) act as a funnel for fan connections. Here we look at how this can be done in such a way that you're engaging fans at all different levels. _____________________________ In this new post to MusicThinkTank, Dave...
Me Me Me vs Free Free Free
We are in transition, and at an impasse on a couple of major issues that affect each other. Having written about both items for 19 years, Im considering whether further writing is warranted. Perhaps its time to accept that nothing will change. Item 1 is the indie artist payment issue, including not just the falling sales of music but how much the music industry believes new artists should be paid. (Its important to focus on that new artists portion of the statement.) Item 2 revolves around the radio industry, online and off. Those in control seem to believe growth in competition has no affect on how it prices radios product - advertising, including not only the dollar pricing but the mechanics of how ad pricing is constructed. After spending time heavily involved on both sides, Ive come to a decision: Nothing will correct what all parties believe to be inequities forced upon them. Thats the Me, Me, Me aspect of our title. The Free, Free, Free part comes from altered consumer behavior. Here I speak about the delivery of audio entertainment and information; its forever changed, with increasing expectations for so much more at little-to-no-cost. Artists want to be paid for every spin of their music, whether or not it is used as a draw (as in established acts), or to expand a fan base for newbies (there is a huge difference). On the radio side, stations believe they can continue a revenue model thats based on being local, having limited competition, and providing no proof of performance in an ad world demanding media-provided ROI (Return on Investment). Daily I read comments from broadcasters and pure-play radio operators on how streaming is a profit wasteland. All are mired in past patterns that base revenue on a cost-per-thousand delivery of advertising. Thats an effective strategy when all around you are using the same; but in an internet world where most revenue is generated on a cost-per-action (CPA), CPM doesnt work due to a meager audience at most every online station.
The New Artist Model Approach To Musician Websites
This post was written byDave Kusekand originally appeared on the Bandzoogle Blog.
Your website is arguably the most important piece of your online presence - its the glue that holds everything together. But it can be so much more than just the place you sell your music.
Your website can be a powerful funnel that drives your fans towards more engagement and helps them up the ladder towards superfans. Its the place where you can convert people from casual fans to paying customers. And its the place where you can start more direct conversations with your fans as you grow your email list.
I dont want you to think of your website as a just static page. Instead, think of it as a part of a big funnel - a tool to move your fans towards deeper engagement.
If you want to go even deeper to optimize your musician website to be a powerful platform that will drive engagement and sales, make sure youjoin Dave Cool and Dave Kusek in a free online musician website workshop on Thursday, May 26 at 1PM EST.
Were going to go through the key elements every musician website needs, plus well be doing a few free website critiques, so dont miss it! Even if you cant make it live, signup here to get the recorded replaysent to you!
Hit the Big Three
The first step to really make your website an effective funnel is to make sure youre hitting the big three. In other words, your website needs to specifically address three different types of fans and give them the content theyre looking for. (You also need to have content specifically for press, but well talk about that in thefree online workshop)
1. Potential Fans
Number one is potential fans. These are people who have just discovered your music. Maybe they got a recommendation from a friend, they saw you open for another band they like, or they heard your music on the radio. Either way, theyre looking for more information and theyre looking to solidify their opinion about you - and that means you need to make a good first impression.

Bandcamp’s feefree Fridays to continue into 2021
Bandcamp has pledged to continue its fee-free Fridays in 2021 to support artists whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.Waiving its revenue share for all sales taken one Friday each month to allow 100% of proceeds to go to creators, the online music store has paid out over $40 million to artists and labels since the scheme first started in March - thanks to participation from almost 800,000 fans. Acknowledging that it may be several months until live performance revenue makes a return and musicians still need to pay rent, the artist-centered scheme will now continue until May 7th 2021. A new poll showed that 82% of musicians earned less than £200 from streaming service throughout the whole of 2019. On Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of buyers' money will reach the artist and label after payment processor fees - and they’ll still receive an average of 82% from Bandcamp purchases on any other day of the month. DJ Mag launched a weekly roundup of the most vital Bandcamp releases in solidarity with the artists and labels impacted through the pandemic: find the most recent roundup here. We encourage you to check out Blackbandcamp.info - an expansive, crowd-sourced list of Black artists and music on Bandcamp. Read our feature about Black Bandcamp here. You can also read DJ Mag’s feature about the rise of Bandcamp here. Bandcamp Fridays will continue next year on February 5th, March 5th, April 2nd, and May 7th.
