Guillermo Velázquez y Los Leones de la Sierra Serrano de Corazón review – New Year slam energy
(Smithsonian Folkways/Discovery)Xichú is a little town in the mountains of Guanajuato state, Mexico, and the location for the extraordinary all-night New Year topada, in which rival teams of poets and their MUSIC ans battle for hours, cheered on by thousands of spectators before a winner is declared. The style is known as huapango arribeño and the folk poet and singer Guillermo Velázquez is a specialist. He describes the event in The Poets’ Topada, a remarkable 20-minute piece in which he recites and sings, backed by his own huapanguera large-bodied guitar, the small jarana guitar and violins – and with two other poet/singers acting out the role of contestants. Elsewhere, he uses spoken word and song to discuss highland life or migration to the United States, and provides backing for Chabe Flores with her gutsy songs about women’s empowerment. An intriguing, energetic set – though more detailed translations would have been useful. Continue reading...

Demian Licht on transmitting knowledge being a demon of the light
Demian Licht is building a portal one connecting us to a new future, one scrapping the parts of society holding people back, one linking the world. Shes not just making TECHNO shes making a statement about the future with her MUSIC and practice, one that resonates with Detroits pioneers and the bleeding-edge aspirations of a new generation today. Oh, and theres some strange physical portal involved, too, one purportedly located at the geographic center of Mexico uh, maybe. But you might want to watch that spot. So, not only did we want to hear more about Demian ...

Thomas Jacks new track is Much Atmosphere very tropical
I've been such a sucker for Thomas Jack for so long now, that it brings me great joy each time my soundcloud feed presents a newbie from the man in charge. As well, it's been great for us Aussies to see him take the US by (tropical) storm, after finally after sorting his Visa issues! The killer kick-line and Ben's reconstructed voice, creates the ULTIMATE hook in this upbeat remix. The real charm is the IRL recorded crushing waves from Tulum, Mexico, during his recent trip...a clear influence in this beach side gem. I said it a few months ago, and it's clearer now more than ever, that the flute is the new saxophone, as heard in this remix. Check it out:
PS: Things got a little crazy at the show in Brooklyn, and Thomas Jack drank a beer from his boot...up and Adam?

TOP 100 DJS 2016 POLL ANALYSIS
This year’s Top 100 DJs is the biggest yet! Our worldwide poll cracked over a million votes for the first time ever, with DANCE MUSIC fans from virtually every country on earth voting for their favourites. The most votes were from the US, followed by India, Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Russia, China, Japan and Guatemala — ably demonstrating what a global poll this is.This year there are 13 new entries and six re-entries, and we have a new winner! 20, Martin Garrix is the youngest ever winner of the Top 100 DJs poll, and it caps a meteoric rise for him over the past few years — ever since ‘Animals’, made in his bedroom when he was 16, shot to No.1 around the globe in 2013.Garrix has such a vast social media presence and engagement with his fans that he was odds-on favourite to win in 2016. He may be moving more into the pop world now, but he’s just at home producing more underground styles of ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC — and has set up some aliases in order to do so. He’s mates with people like Seth Troxler and Carl Cox as well as fellow EDM Dutchmen like Tiesto and Hardwell, and hardly anybody has a bad word to say about the super-nice DJ/producer.Garrix leaps to the summit from last year’s No.3, while last year’s winners, Dimitri Vegas Like Mike, slip down to No.2. Hardwell also drops one place, to No.3, while the top ten overall remains largely unchanged — Armin van Buuren (No.4), Tiesto (5) and David Guetta (6) all keep the same positions as 2015. Avicii drops down to No.11, probably as a result of his impending retirement, with Oliver Heldens jumping into the top ten from last year’s No.12 — the Highest House DJ. Skrillex stays at No.9 for the third year in a row, and Afrojack stays in the top ten - just.In the next ten, last year’s highest new entry KSHMR is up 11 to No.12 and Don Diablo is up 15 places to No.15. Ummet Ozcan is up 17 to No.19, while just outside at No.22 — up 10 places — is DJ Snake. Calvin Harris, despite
WE LOOK BACK AT DANCE MUSIC IN 2015
January is a notoriously slow month in clubland — a time when gym memberships take priority over all-nighters and pennies are scraped together. Many top flight DJs disappear off to warmer climes (Mexico etc) for the month. Bastards.Initially, 2015 was a big year for label anniversaries, with Kompakt turning 20, Planet Mu 25, and Tri Angle five — putting out a host of standout compilation releases. While in the US, vinyl sales reached a 26-year high, reflecting the increasing desire to own wax.The new year kicked off with Jackmaster flying the flag on our cover, having just won Best DJ at our Best Of British awards the previous month.February saw Aphex Twin scoop a Grammy for ‘Syro’ (in typical Aphex fashion, he neglected to collect it) and that month the elusive producer began an exhaustive dump of tracks from his personal archive onto SoundCloud for free download. RDJ geeks everywhere rejoiced. We were stationed in Miami in March for WMC (five days of partying in tropical heat... someone’s gotta do it!) for the DJ Mag party at the Surfcomber Hotel on South Beach, where Seth Troxler delighted a sandy crowd with Phats Small’s stone-cold classic ‘Turn Around’.The Detroit renaissance man covered that month's issue in typical colourful fashion — plus flamingo — inviting us into his home for a chat and some fried sausage (not a euphemism). Another stop on our Miami voyage was Damian Lazarus's Get Lost, a 24-hour party that boasted a who’s-who of underground house and techno stars. In April, our publicly-voted Top 100 Clubs poll decided that the mega venues of Ibiza were no match for Brazil’s Green Valley, a 25-year-old arena in the heart of the rainforest. While the legendary DJ-Kicks series reached its 50th edition, and lined up German techno legend DJ Koze for the task, who predictably smashed it out the park. Our new favourite Internet phenomenon emerged in May: ‘90s Boiler Room, the YouTube channel that overlaid Vengaboys and Eurotrash songs onto clips of Richie Hawtin
Björk Teases Arca Remix of Isobel
More incredible work between Björk and Arca is sure to come following their team-up on the former's 2015 LP Vulnicura. Now, a new Instagram teaser shows that the talented producer could bring a fresh spin to Björk's older work.
In an Instagram post today (March 23), Björk revealed that Arca will perform alongside her at Toluca, Mexico's Ceremonia festival. She promised that "lush treats" would be a part of the set including a "ridiculous" version of her track "Isobel" from 1995's Post. You can hear a snippet of the remix below.
Last year, Björk revealed that she and Arca were at work on a follow-up to Vulnicura, saying they had completed three songs.
"I'm writing my next thing. I'm still allowing myself to be a submarine; I don't totally have the view of it yet," she revealed. "It's funny, each album is different for me. Like, what comes first? With this one it's maybe the melodies. This is very abstract, but the melodies have a similar kind of shape.
"The last album, we sort of call it 'hell' – it was like divorce! So we are doing paradise now. Utopia. We have done hell, we have earned some points."
Hear a snippet of Arca's "Isobel" remix below.
i am extremely excited to share with you that @arca1000000 is going to join me for mexican festival ceremonia and we have some lush treats for you including this ridiculous version of isobel he did :

Las Cafeteras Tastes Like LA review – defiantly political but cheerful party folk
(Las Cafeteras)While Donald Trump continues his campaign to build a wall along the Mexican border, some of the best new music in the US is being produced by Mexican Americans. Following on from Arizona’s rousing Orkesta Mendoza come Las Cafeteras from east Los Angeles, who will make their European debut at Womad this summer. A defiantly political but cheerful folk-influenced acoustic band, they are influenced by the son jarocho styles of Mexico’s Veracruz state. They play the guitar-like jaranta and requinto jarocho, but add a dash of hip-hop to the mix. The songs here are in both Spanish and English, and range from the summery Vamos to the Beach to a reworking of Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land, which ends as a rousing celebration, and the upbeat but thoughtful If I Was President – apparently their policies would prioritise education, wealth redistribution and a party in the White House.
