Listen To Tchamis Banging TomorrowWorld Set
TomorrowWorld went off without a hitch this weekend in the Chattahoochee Hills for the US version of the famed Belgium festival with a few live sets already making their way online. The pick of the litter amongst the 'EDM' strong lineup was an easy standout from recent Australian tourer Tchami and a solid 20 minute cut of banging house tunes spliced with edits of classic GRIME beaters. His set would have been a welcome addition to the usual 'EDM' fodder with Tchami telling us in a recent interview what he thinks of these big festivals; It's definitely a part of the Electronic Music's Culture now. Ginger Baker I’m not an easy person to get on with – a classic interview from the vaults
The great drummer has turned 76, and to mark the occasion, here’s a classic Disc and Music Echo interview from 1970 with the Cream founder, taken from Rock’s Backpages, the home of online MUSIC writingGinger Baker is 31 years old and you don’t ignore him. You can’t. He has accumulated a monstrous reputation over the past 10 years that makes him the wildest, most uncontrollable MUSIC an around. It goes before him into any room so that people, rather unjustly, tend to recoil with horror directly as he looms on the horizon. He says he’s actually calmed down a lot: “I used to be mean – I’d deliberately mess up recording sessions with my temper and go mad at the slightest thing. Then one day some friends took me to one side and pointed out that it might be wiser if I calmed down. I respected them enough to listen – and not throw anything.” Continue reading...

How To Develop A Context For Your Music
Guest post by Ayla Smith. This article originally appeared on Soundflys Flypaper
Online audiences are a powerful engine. When people listen online, they can easily share your music far and wide.Getting discoveredis not dependent on someone walking into a record store, and its easy to find out whos listening and where theyre from so you can maximize your impact. But too often,a song alone is not enough to tell your full story.
Gettingadded to a popular Spotify playlistis great, but it fragments a listeners experience of your brand, your personality, your narrative, etc. You need to be able to take the story further. As you plan yourdigital promotion strategy, one thing to think about is whether contextual content can play a part in connecting audiences closer to your music. Via your own social channels, you can create acontent universe articles, videos, social posts, and other interactive elements todrive an emotional connectionbetween your songwriting and your listeners. But, like, howdo you do that?
Here are a few tips for crafting compelling stories to accompany and provide context for your music, online or otherwise.
Be relatable.
You want people to relate to, understand, and become invested emotionally in what youre communicating. Art is such a highly personal expression, and it can sometimes alienate those who havent had the same experiences as us but we can always work to connect the dots for them. Using contextual content to tell a story that allows someone to relate our music totheir own experienceis a good way to do this.
Identify the essence ofwhat it is youre trying to say pinpointing the shareable meaning, if you will and then find ways to bring that narrative into everything you create: be they truths about love, grief, ambition, embarrassing moments the list goes on.
You want someone to read or watch what youve made and say,Oh, wow, yep thats me.
Join existing conversations.

New online tool converts Spotify playlists into Bandcamp link
A new online tool launched by Hype Machine makes it easy to convert your Spotify playlists into lists of tracks to purchase on Bandcamp.Created by the music blogging aggregator Hype Machine, the ‘Merch Table’ allows users to copy and paste URLs of individual Spotify playlists into the platform, which will then source the releases and generate links to purchase the music on Bandcamp. The tool makes it easier for fans to support the artists they listen to by buying music from a platform which provides creators with an average of at least 82% of buyer’s money. At the time of writing, Hype Machine recorded over 133,900 tracks found on Bandcamp from Spotify using the ‘Merch Table’.Acknowledging that it may be several months until live performance revenue makes a return and musicians still need to pay rent, this week Bandcamp announced that their applauded fee-free Fridays initiative will continue until May 7th 2021, allowing 100% of proceeds from purchases to go to artists. Read about it here. As part of our 2020: a Year in Dance Music feature, we reflected on what has been a monumental year for the music sharing marketplace, and on the state of Bandcamp Day as it enters into the new year. The South East Grind Debut Fourth Volume Of ForwardThinking Compilation Series
I could start off by writing something about how The South East Grind (TSEG) are the next collective to look out for, or how their going to have a huge 2016, but really, I think we're long past that point now. TSEG have been pushing the boundaries of electronic music since their first release - delivering bubbly, energy driven tracks. The South East Grind's latest offering comes in the form of their fourth compilation. Volume four features tracks from Dead As Disco, Mbe, NAPKN and LVYN among several others. Most notably, however, are the tracks from William Crooks, Lojack, Hier and CMRN.Listen to the full compilation below and find more on TSEG online and on Soundcloud.
Techno Recommendation Bot
Hey all! Just like everyone else in this subreddit, I love electronic music. Especially techno, tech house, deep house etc. A few months ago I started collecting tracks from my favorite online radio stations (basically a script which periodically grabs the track names and stores them in a database) and wanted an easy way to listen to them one by one. So I made this small bot (Facebook Messenger), which sends track recommendations with links to YouTube, SoundCloud (and Spotify if found) when you request it. What I usually do: request a track and click on YouTube. Thanks to the Autoplay feature of YouTube I can get endless hours of tracks that (mostly) fit well with my start song. Here's the bot: https://m.me/technorecbot (Facebook Messenger) Have fun with it and tell me what you think :) submitted by /u/5hay [link] [comments]
The Single Most Important Lesson I Learned On Tour
Touring is a complex, daunting, and exciting thing. As an independent band, you might think the hardest thing about touring is booking all the gigs. But youd be wrong. The internet makes it easy to book gigs. Facebook, email, and Google are basically all you need. Another thing you need to know: most venues will treat you like a booking agent/promoter, meaning youll have to find bands to play with you. Again, Facebook and email are essential for booking, and some bands will be happy to help you find more support to fill out the bill.
The toughest touring hurdle is the finances. Even (and especially) if youre signed to a label, the financial aspect can be a nightmare. Labels want you to sell lots of tickets so you can pay for all the support theyre providing. Since most people just listen to music for free online, youll notice that most touring bands charge a lot more for shows now. Thats because they need to make money to pay for the recording and everything else.
If youre not signed to a label and youre putting together a DIY tour, your bands finances are the number one issue to consider. Ready to hear about just how nightmarish it can get? Kick back for a minute and listen to my story.
Beauty and the Credit Beast: A Tour Tale
If youve read any of my articles here on Music Think Tank, you may have stumbled across the fact that I was once in a band called the The Kitchen. One day, the guitarist and primary singer for The Kitchen decided to quit her job and book a tour. No joke. Thats the first clue as to what was wrong. You need a job that will allow you to take time off and come back, unless of course you decide that from here on out youre going to do nothing but tour constantly and live on the road. Nothing wrong with that idea, but for many its unrealistic.
When my bandmate decided she wanted to book a three week tour, me and the drummer loved the idea. Problem was, I had a job that would allow me to do it, but the drummer didnt. He was a college student living

6 Ways To Make Sure You’re Leaving Nothing On The Merch Table
This post was written by Brian Buchanan and originally appeared on theBandzoogle Blog.
Its 2017! Here we all are in the future, and what do you know - the music industry hasnt collapsed!
Sure, CDs arent selling the way they used to in stores. Neither isdigital music, thanks to the explosion of streaming services. But those of us living the nose-to-the-grindstone, unglamorous life of the touring musician know a secret:people still buy stuff at shows.
[The Ultimate Guide to Selling Band Merch Online]
The ONLY place I still listen to CDs is in my car. When Im pumped about a live show, I want to listen to the bands music on my way home. I want to hang a poster over the holes in my drywall. I want to buy a hoodie so my girlfriend has something trendy to borrow from me.
When youre on the road, a good night at the merch table can mean the difference between a hotel bed and a van seat. Im going to walk you through half a dozen ways to make your merch table pop.
First, though - some basic ground rules.
Your merch area is an extension of your stage
Its part of your bands personality in a room or at a festival, and you should be aware of the message youre sending. If your table is chaotic, and looks like it was thrown together haphazardly, your band will look amateur - and your customers (especially older customers) will feel less comfortable handing you their credit cards.
Speaking of which, its crucial that you find a way to accept credit cards.Sign up for Square and get a reader.Their app is very intuitive and you will definitely see a difference in sales. Many people are reluctant to part with cash at a bar, but its not because they dont want your stuff - they just need drink money!
Also -the place youre told to sell your merch might not actually be the best place in the venue.Make sure its a convenient spot for people to linger, not directly in front of a blasting speaker or blocking access to a bathroom.
Finally -never forget to mention your merch table from the stage, slowly
