Coachella best experienced on the shoulders of a reality star
Blasted with toxic sand, pulverised by blaring EDM and genitally grazed by security, our correspondent found Coachella hard work – until he had an unlikely epiphanyI don’t know if Coachella agrees with me. I’ve already outed myself as the crusty old sea captain of MUSIC journalism but after experiencing three days of thumping bass and $17 lobster rolls, I might never be able to recapture the jaunty spirit. In short, Coachella is a hassle. I’m in awe of the fact that no one gets trampled or chokes to death on a big wad of toxic sand. Perhaps that is its own triumph. Coachella attracts more and more people every year, which is a testament to its enduring popularity and its status as the pre-eminent American festival for witnessing the emergence of new ARTIST and the valedictory statements of legacy acts. But the overwhelming crowds can throw someone like me, who’d rather sit in a dentist’s office with an old copy of Golf Digest, into a fit of panic. Continue reading...

Watch Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorkes Beautiful People
The eerie, misty video to the collaborative track Beautiful People, shown at Sundance, is now online exclusively for the Guardian. Take a look It’s curious, given the cultural currency of having Thom Yorke feature on your track, just how many artists choose to turn his vocals down in the mix. Modeselektor, Burial and Flying Lotus have manipulated, buried and distorted his spectral presence on their songs. Maybe it’s testament to how Yorke’s instrument-like voice transcends the egocentric posturing of the indie rock singer stereotype, or perhaps it’s a badge of solidarity – emphasising that his work with artists on the outskirts of mainstream music requires no fanfare, no big deal. Or maybe Yorke hates being the centre of attention. In Radiohead’s 2016 shows, Yorke has been enjoying his role front and centre of stage like never before in the band’s 20-year career – unselfconsciously dancing and interacting as if he was in the audience, rather than narcissistically absorbing the adoration. Continue reading...

A Serenade to Music review – Come ho Schubert rarities make for a stellar season sendoff
Wigmore Hall, LondonFranz Schubert’s range of influences were brought to the fore in a fascinating and often beautiful programme of lesser-known worksThe closing concert of the current Wigmore season was a remarkable occasion on several counts. It rounded off the hall’s two-year survey of Schubert’s complete lieder with a first-half sequence of largely forgotten songs, duets, choruses and cantatas. After the interval came a celebration of music itself as a harmonising force that encompassed works by Purcell, Croft and Chabrier, before culminating in a performance of Vaughan Williams’s Serenade to Music. There were 17 singers, two pianists – Graham Johnson and Eugene Asti – and what may prove to be a career-making cast change, when Milly Forrest, a graduate from the Royal Academy of Music and a member of the Wigmore’s front-of-house staff, stepped in as a last-minute replacement for Ruby Hughes. The Schubert rarities were fascinating. As a choral composer, he was clearly an accomplished mimic. Kantate für Irene Kiesewetter, written to celebrate the recovery of a well-known civil servant’s daughter, could be by Rossini. Handel, meanwhile, lurks behind Mirjams Siegesgesang, a mini-oratorio for dramatic soprano, chorus and piano, that found Elizabeth Watts on blazing form. There were beautiful things among the lesser-known songs. Milan Siljanov’s performance of the haunting Der Kreuzzug had superb depth and authority. And Trost in Tränen, originally written for a single performer, became an engaging duet for a very forthright Gavan Ring and Marcus Farnsworth, who was at his most poetic. Continue reading...
