FoundationFM launches with femaleled program to “showcase underground music scene”
A new radio station called Foundation.FM has been launched in London.Based in Peckham, the station, which is now live, has been started up by Becky Richardson, Ami Bennett and Frankie Wells who, between them, have experience at a number of radio stations including BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Radar Radio. The station has been launched with an ethos of showcasing various parts of the underground MUSIC scene and its founders have stressed a focus on centring women, though say that the station isn’t female only. “Usually there's only one seat at the table for a female DJ, whereas at Foundation.FM every seat at the table is open to anyone, whatever their gender or sexual orientation,” Bennett said in an interview with Time Out, adding that “radio is still a very male-dominated place.” The team behind the station say that the suspension of broadcasting in April and subsequent closure of Radar Radio provided a catalyst for launching Foundation.FM. “Me and Frankie met that day, and we were talking off the back of that. Our ethos, brand identity and morals will be completely different,” Richardson says. The station’s programming will run from Monday until Friday starting each day at 10am and running through until 10pm. Off Radar how the influential radio station was silenced by scandal
The platform, which aimed to promote the ‘new sound of London’, has gone off air following a claims of cultural exploitation and sexual harassmentWith a company motto of “Tune in or fuck off”, online radio station Radar, founded at the end of 2014, set out to become an uncompromising platform for the UK’s underground music scene. Following in the footsteps of stations such as NTS and the live music streaming platform Boiler Room, Radar was prophesied by many – including this paper – to be representative of “the new sound of London”. The station made its name by championing the recent revival of the UK’s grime and electronic scenes, showcasing work from the likes of producer Ikonika and rappers Novelist and Avelino, as well as hosting shows led by music labels Night Slugs and Planet Mu.In a podcast interview with dance music website Resident Advisor this year, Radar’s founder, 27-year-old Ollie Ashley – the son of the Sports Direct owner, billionaire Mike Ashley – prided himself on the station’s lack of censorship. “I really believe in free speech [...] that people should have a platform to say what they want, whether people are gonna agree with you or not,” he said. STYLE GUIDE TECHNO PT 1 – HISTORY SOUND DESIGN
F9 Audio founder and electronic music authority James Wiltshire turns his attention to techno in the latest installment of Point Blank’s Style Guide series.Techno is more than a genre – it’s an institution. Combining the avant-garde electronica that was coming out of Europe in the early ‘70s and ‘80s with the electric funk and post-disco beamed from Detroit’s underground radio stations, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson began to create what is now known as early Detroit techno.Nowadays, techno’s countless sub genres and variants can all be traced back to those pioneers, known as the Belleville Three. In Point Blank’s latest installment of their Style Guide series, James Wiltshire (Freemasons, Beyoncé) breaks down techno’s history, the seismic impact it had upon culture and the actual sound of one of electronic music’s most defining genres. You can watch part one above, and make sure you subscribe to Point Blank’s YouTube channel for more tutorials and live events – including the second part of the Style Guide: Techno, coming soon.Learning to craft your own tones and sounds is just a very small part of what you can learn on Point Blank’s online Music Production Master Diploma.
