Famous firsts Sleeper Agents Josh Martin and Tony Smith
Read more about Famous firsts: Sleeper Agent's Josh Martin and Tony Smith at MusicRadar.com On March 24th, the Bowling Green, Kentucky-based sextet Sleeper Agent will release About Last Night, a superbly paced set of winning GARAGE pop-rock that follows their equally convincing 2011 debut, Celebrasion.Sleeper Agent (Justin Wilson, drums; Josh Martin, lead guitar; Alex Kandel, vocals; Tony Smith, guitar and vocals; Lee Williams, bass; and Scott Gardner, keyboards) are heading out on their first headling tour, beginning April 8th in Lansing, Michigan. Ahead of the tour and album release, we sat down with Martin and Smith for a little something we like to call Famous Firsts. What was your first guitar, and how old were you when you got it? Josh Martin: "I was probably 13 or 14 when I got my first real guitar. I was in eighth grade, and my dad gave mean old beat-up guitar. It turned out to be a hand-me-down 1969 Fender Telecaster, black with a white pickguard. My dad used it on sessions, and two of my older brothers had also played it when they were growing up. It was so used and worn down that it barely even had frets on it. It's tougher to play than other Teles, but it sounds like no other that I've ever heard. Dad said they modded it at the factory with a unique out-of-phase wiring. It sounds nasty and I still love it." Tony Smith: "I used to sneak into my dad's room when he was at work and toy around with his guitar. He finally got the hint, and my parents got me a Hamer Slammer electric guitar and Peavey practice amp for Christmas when I was 10 years old."What was the first band – or album – that made you want to be a guitarist?Smith: "This one's a bit embarrassing. I saw Hanson on MTV when I was 10. I was thrilled that there were kids my age in a band on national television. I soon started seeking out more and more MUSIC However, the band that really pulled me in was Aerosmith. I think I spent every allowance dollar buying their back catalog."Martin: "My dad is Grady

Chips Moman obituary
Guitarist, record producer and songwriter who co-wrote The Dark End of the Street and worked with Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and Tammy WynetteIf Chips Moman had done nothing more than revive the becalmed recording career of Elvis Presley in the late 1960s, he would have earned his place in history. By selecting In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, Don’t Cry Daddy and Kentucky Rain for sessions held at his own Memphis studio, he gave fresh impetus to the final phase of the singer’s professional life. But Moman, who has died aged 79, had a much more extensive string of achievements. As a guitarist, he decorated the closing bars of Aretha Franklin’s epochal I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) with eloquent country-soul phrases. As a producer, he instructed the 16-year-old Alex Chilton to sing “aeroplane” rather than “airplane” on the first line of the Box Tops’ The Letter. As a composer, he co-wrote (with Dan Penn) The Dark End of the Street, a definitive and much-covered deep-soul ballad. The ARTIST he worked with included Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Tammy Wynette. Continue reading...

Cage the Elephant Tell Me Im Pretty review – hardpunching welloiled rock
(RCA)When Cage the Elephant blazed from Kentucky in 2008, a trail of broken noses and busted amplifiers in their wake, the Schulz brothers’ live-wire quartet seemed likely to burn brightly but briefly. However, eight years, a US No 2 album (2011’s Thank You, Happy Birthday) and a Grammy nomination (for 2013’s Melophobia) later, their fourth album finds the Black Keys man Dan Auerbach taming them into a hard-punching, well-oiled rocking machine. The producer’s trademarks – slightly psychedelic 60s garage rock given a postmodern sound – are all over Tell Me I’m Pretty, but the band never abandon their own singular, brattish energy. There are Stonesy and Kinksy riffs and classic themes about worried parents, ruckuses, self-doubt and at least one visit to the doctor “’cause I don’t feel right”. The band are operating in an ever more overcrowded field, but their songwriting has never been sharper, and the likes of Too Late to Say Goodbye and killer ballad Trouble mean they turn up at the party with lots of catchy tunes and joie de vivre. Ancient Ocean Titans Island
As originally seen on Exclaim.ca.The world moves pretty fast these days.
If you're looking to hit pause for a second, NYC-via-Kentucky resident J.R. Bohannon can slow it down with the best of them. He returns to eclectic powerhouse label Beyond Beyond Is Beyond for his second Ancient Ocean album, Titan's Island, which lives up to the mystifying majesty that its title suggests. Its shimmering, synthetic drones ooze through tweaked string-laden loops and artsy guitar noodling in a mesmerizing blend of modern classical and late '70s ambient music, somewhere between Jóhann Jóhannsson and Brian Eno.
It really works. I was listening to this album on the bus writing this, when some pencil-neck twerp a few seats down started yelling at people to stop touching him. Normally, that kind of scene would create unbearable tension in me, but close your eyes and focus on the shimmering timbres in sweeping gestures that unfurl within each of the four lengthy compositions on this album, and Zen's your uncle. If you can't find your centre to this, you may just need the assistance of drugs.
