  • The Chemical Brothers Unvault Track That Didnt Make The Album
The Chemical Brothers have casually released a bonus track on the deluxe album edition of 'Born In The Echoes' dubbed "Wo Ha".The bonus track that's emerged from the duo’s Manchester vault is filled with a vile of discordant echoes smothered by an intense haunting bass-line. I can see why the duo couldn't resist including it in some fashion with the insatiably throwback BREAKBEATS style tone being too good to hide. While you investigate this newbie, you should also check out the 7 timeless remixes of The Chemical Brothers that are too good to not be heard!

  • Sleigh Bells Jessica Rabbit review – noisepop duo branch out
(Torn Clean)When Sleigh Bells first roared into view in 2010, it felt as if they were less a band and more a conundrum: namely, can a group simultaneously be cranium-crushingly loud and chart-botheringly sweet? Four albums later, and with that question conclusively answered, the noisepop duo have decided to branch out a little. Jessica Rabbit is still clearly a Sleigh Bells album – the recognisable thud of Derek Miller’s distorted guitar lines on bruising opening track It’s Just Us Now stands as punishing confirmation of that – but there’s a wider sonic palette on show than on previous efforts: snatches of synth and GLITCH BREAKBEATS jostle for attention alongside Alex Krauss’s clean, poppy vocals. Indeed, where once Krauss’s voice felt overwhelmed by the cacophony behind it, here it’s given star billing, gliding over the rap-rock riff of I Can’t Stand You Anymore and providing a punchy counterpoint to I Can Only Stare’s frosty RB. An encouraging move into new territory. Continue reading...

  • The return of jungle
An avalanche of snare drums, sub-bass that pulverises your rib-cage, possessed divas wailing from the abyss; fragments of funk, shards of techno, dabs of dancehall, broadsides of polyrhythm: these are just some of the ingredients of jungle, a style of db that is enjoying a remarkable revival of late. Heard through a club system, jungle remains the most exhilarating UK dance sound.First made in the early ‘90s, it’s exciting a new generation. There’s a large influx of fresh artists, DJs and record labels magnetised by the breakbeats, atmospherics and sense of space in the genre.Rather than stick to the restricting rhythm structures of modern db, artists such as Djinn, Tim Reaper, Outer Heaven, Mantra, Coco Bryce, Forest Drive West, Kid Lib, Sully, Homemade Weapons and Dead Man’s Chest are forging beats with booming 808 bass, a blizzard of drum chops and influences from all over. It’s not the clean clinical mix-downs of current db that excite them, but the rugged and raw vibe of the mid ‘90s, when artists from Remarc, Dillinja and D’Cruze to Source Direct, Splash and Photek first pushed atmosphere, low-end and drum edits to their limit.“One of the reasons I went towards the jungle side of things was down to aesthetics,” says Dead Man’s Chest – real name Alex Eveson. “In db, the sound over time had cleaned up a lot and it was becoming sterile, lacking texture. Texture was something I looked to in my music. There came a point when the standardisation of mixdowns in drum bass wasn’t doing it for me.”Previously known as Eveson, the Bristol-based producer changed his artist name to disassociate himself from the smoother ‘liquid’ sound. “It was because of pigeonholing,” he says. “I was looking to do something a little different and I thought I should come back with a new alias, as it would be taken as a fresh thing from the off rather than people having any preconceptions.” Releasing through Ingredients and his own Western Lore label, Dead Man’s Chest has quickly generated a

  • Gold Panda Good Luck and Do Your Best review – warmly immersive electronica
(City Slang)It would be unfair compare Gold Panda to Caribou on the basis that they both make immersive, tender electronica, have at one point or another been signed to City Slang, and are named after cute mammals. But if the latter’s shuffling house rhythms and minor-key samples give you a kick then Mr Panda is certainly a pleasing chaser. He has not yet reached the same heights as his labelmate, perhaps because he favours glitch over a good hook. But his fourth album, though still twitching with IDM, breakbeats and hip-hop, bathes the instrumentals in a more intimate glow, crackling like vinyl playing under an amber nightlight. Inspired by a trip to Japan, it has oriental flourishes woven in subtly, from the relentless piano break of Chiba Nights paired with nimble two-step and fluttering flute, to the windchime shimmer of Pink and Green, and Song for a Dead Friend – a eulogy of cacophonous video game noises and Japanese koto. More than an audio travel journal, though, these songs are headline festival sundowners: the slow-burning acoustic thrum of I Am a Real Punk, the gorgeously textured, jazz-inflected Autumn Fall and Time Eater’s sombre temple-step. Bound to give you that warm, fuzzy feeling. Continue reading...

  • Lone Backtail Was Heavy
After making listeners dial a hotline to hear his new single last week, Lone has delivered a stream of "Backtail Was Heavy" for those of us who couldn't hear it over our handsets. Much like the early rave culture that the producer's phone call promo drew from, the new track is full of knocking breakbeats that harken back to the '90s, giving way to his identifiable synth sounds every so often. Lone's last full-length release was 2014's Reality Testing, released through RS Records. Take a listen to "Backtail Was Heavy" in the player below.

  • Goldie The Journey Man
As originally seen on Exclaim.ca.There's a moment early on The Journey Man, around 75 seconds into opening track "Horizon" — when Goldie's signature polyrhythmic drum beat kicks in — that comes off tremendously gratifying for long-time fans of the drum'n'bass legend.   The full-length, Goldie's first in 19 years, keeps his formula locked down, deftly realizing that the appetite for street-savvy London-hailing bass music has returned. With stunning vocals from a host of up-and-comers, including Natalie Duncan, Terri Walker, Natalie Williams and (his wife) Mika Wassenaar Price, Goldie masterfully blends bellicose, jagged breakbeats with soulful reveries on tracks like the potent "Mountain," the sexually charged "I Think of You" and the modernised "Tomorrow's Not Today."   The Northern England producer still finds room to break up the groove he's created, though, adding a handful of raucous instrumentals alongside male vocal-featuring tracks from Tyler Lee Daly (on the Paisley-funk "Castaway") and Jose James (on the straight-up piano ballad, "Truth").   At 16 tracks and a whopping 110-minute runtime, there are some songs that blend into the other, but it's a testament to Goldie's creativity and flexibility as an artist that there's never a single moment on The Journey Man that sounds compromised.

The actor and drum’n’bass pioneer is joining us to answer your questions in a live webchat on Wednesday 13 May at 1pm BST – post yours in the comments below 9.42am BST Emerging out of Jamaican soundsystem music, but forged in the pirate radio stations and claustrophobia of London, jungle was a revolution in 1990s dance culture and Goldie was its figurehead. Producing and DJing as the leader of the Metalheadz label, the music he championed was full of skittering, quicksilver breakbeats and dystopian moods. He shepherded its evolution into drum’n’bass, ending up on coffee tables as well as grimy clubs, and made ambitiously symphonic tracks like the 22-minute Timeless and the hour-long Mother. • Wysing Arts Centre festival review – silky breakbeats and brooding techno
Wysing Arts Centre, CambridgeThere’s everything from b-boy dance and a Spice Girls-inspired art installation to party funk at this woolly but wonderful party in deepest CambridgeshireWysing Arts Centre is a residential set of studio spaces in the middle of the Cambridgeshire countryside, and once a year it hosts this underground music festival. An assortment of archimage-level hipsters are bussed out to the venue, where the musicians are united by a common theme: this year it’s Space-Time: The Multiverse, on “altered states and multiple identities”. This is a bit of a woolly get-out to allow absolutely any style, from brooding techno to post-punk, but no matter – the quality is almost uniformly excellent.A set of electronic drone by Bruce Gilbert, of Wire, and the duo Beaconsfield ArtWorks is ponderous, but the main stage then hosts far more emotive work. Beatrice Dillon proves why she is British techno’s brightest prospect. Using a generic dance palette that you might hear in a white-leather cocktail bar, she splashes it with brilliant authorial touches: a scrape of jazz guitar here, a wail of live sax there. Drill Folly provides icily bracing industrial attack, while Klara Lewis is the highlight of the festival, dragging us from an inky ambient wash into the clouds of a techno climax. James Holden’s collaboration with contemporary dancer Lucy Suggate is a little overlong, but constantly arresting. Suggate moves like a blend of b-boy, toreador and ballerina, centimetres from the crowd, to silky live breakbeats and Holden’s modular and digital synthesis. Continue reading...

  • Trying to figure out a specific house subgenre so I can find more of it

Is this just a branch of tech house? Most of The tracks use breakbeats instead of the usual 4/4 for the most part. Also I find the bass notes are have a ton of reverb and echo on them, as do a lot of the samples. I can see a similarity in the tracks, I doubt the genre has a name however. submitted by firestarsoundsystem [link] [comment]

  • DJ Mag 540 December 2014
DJ Mag 540 December 2014 There's something reassuring about musical nostalgia, revisiting the past and digging into formulas you know will work. Producers are delving into many eras of classic dance just now, from the breakbeats and big riffs of hardcore to the soulful sounds of '90s house. But there's another way of looking at it too. Our cover stars this issue Night Slugs (or label bosses L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok) have made a virtue of digging into the obscure crates of the past and finding records that, while unappreciated at the time, pointed to the sounds of the future. By recontextualising these, and placing them alongside stripped-back new beats, they're making a contribution to moving dance forward by respecting its lineage. Similarly, Slam (also featured this issue) have found ways of combining analogue equipment with modern tech, and are mining arcane electronica to construct gleaming new sounds. In this time of instant gratification when many music websites seem blissfully unaware of dance history, it's pleasing to know DJs and producers both established and upcoming are connecting to the past and using it to create something new. • The Prodigy review – teeth rattled in dystopian breakbeat pantomime
Glasgow AcademyTwenty years on from their multimillion-selling album The Fat of the Land, the Prodigy refuse to get nostalgic, nor reduce the energy levels below total pandemonium In an era when memories can be monetised, most bands – active or otherwise – might hungrily eye the 20th anniversary of their most successful album as an opportunity to mount a special tour to shore up their legacy and top up their Isas. Not so the Prodigy, Liam Howlett’s tetchy but tireless road warriors. As Britpop shrivelled, their third album, 1997’s The Fat of the Land, took Howlett’s uncouth youthquake of evil techno and hot-wired breakbeats to the world; an astonishingly successful incursion into the US arguably laid the groundwork for the recent EDM explosion. Two decades on, you could forgive these Essex boys a backward-looking victory lap to fatten the brand. Continue reading...
