C2C festival review – countrys biggest names bring clangers and charm
SSE Hydro, GlasgowKeith Urban and Lady Antebellum soak a feverish Glasgow crowd in the whiskey-sodden spirit of NashvilleOpening this revue of US country’s biggest names on Friday, eminently likable Arkansas rising star Ashley McBryde delivers a set that gets full house at country-music bingo – dive bars, peach cobbler, countless bonfires and beloved denim – but her voice is gravelled and potent enough to hold up the cliches. In contrast, Texan icon Lyle Lovett wields a sharp, wry brand of humour. With his sharp-suited eight-piece band, he conducts a masterclass from a 40-year discography, and surreal classics such as If I Had a Boat demand a hushed attentiveness from the Hydro. When he cedes the stage to legendary vocalist Francine Reed, she sparks total uproar. Continue reading...

Lucius Good Grief review – melodramatic pop with outsized ideas
(Mom Pop) Related: Lucius: 'Dressing like twins gives us a giggle' An album influenced by touring is an album that sets alarm bells ringing. Thankfully, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig spare us the laments about Arkansas service stations running out of jerky in favour of focusing on the emotional swings that occur after too much time away from home. You can hear it in the titles – Madness, Truce, Gone Insane – and in the references to being held at gunpoint and difficult relationships. The melodrama is given a widescreen pop backdrop – the girl-group sound of their last album, Wildewoman, now beefed up with explosive orchestral choruses, synthy 80s references and the odd key change. You sense they’re aiming to follow the ultra-smart likes of Goldfrapp or St Vincent, but creating truly unique pop is one of the hardest tricks to pull off. At times Lucius sound like they’re trying too hard to be clever (see the overly theatrical wails that conclude Gone Insane), at others they merely sound formulaic, and even alittle dated. Something About You, for instance, recalls Girls Aloud – no terrible thing, but hardly a sound to getexcited about in 2016. Continue reading...
Obituary Rudy Ray Moore
Underground legend and the inspiration for gangsta rapRude, crude and extremely profane, Rudy Ray Moore, who has died aged 81, was an underground legend of black American entertainment. "Underground" remains the correct adjective to describe Moore's success, as he never came near to achieving mainstream appeal. But as a stand-up comedian, film star and singer he enjoyed decades of acclaim among urban African-American communities. If his profanity-laced comedy routines and no-budget movies appeared to be made strictly for ghetto audiences, he more recently became an icon of ironic urban hip to those nostalgic for black American culture before MTV.Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the first of seven children, Moore grew up doing menial work to help his family. After moving to Cleveland, Ohio, he worked as a kitchenhand and began to study tap dance. Aged 17, he moved to Milwaukee and got a job dancing in a nightclub as Prince DuMarr. This led him to join a travelling black variety show where he did his apprenticeship as a singer, dancer and comedian. Enlisted into the US military, he served in Korea and West Germany, where his performances earned him the nickname "the Harlem hillbilly". He settled in Seattle and began recording in the proto-rock'n'roll style then ascendant. His records never sold in sizeable quantities but he remained determined to succeed as an entertainer and moved to Los Angeles in 1959. That year he issued his first comedy album, Below the Belt. Premiere Yuni Wa ‘The Space Base’
Yuni Wa will release his new album ‘Yuniverstity 2’ on 27th November. It follows a string of releases from the prolific Little Rock, Arkansas producer, all of which can be found on his Bandcamp. The 11-track collection is a sequel of sorts to the artist’s 2015 album, ‘Yuniversity’, and finds him exploring space-inspired themes with a sound that flits from experimental, synthy hip-hop to lo-fi house jams. “[It] blends sounds from the past and sounds from the future to meet in the middle,” he says of the release, which attempts to channel "the feeling of being lost in space, partying on different celestial bodies, technological advancements, along with forgiveness and love."You can hear ‘The Space Base’ from the album below, a track he descibres as "A synthwave nostalgia trip for all listeners. It pulls you into a chilled out atmosphere that's vivid and animated."djmag · Premiere: Yuni Wa ‘The Space Base’Yuni WaDJ Mag PremiereProlific Little Rock producer Yuni Wa readies his new album ‘Yuniversity 2’. Beth Ditto Fake Sugar review – sequinned stompers to strut to
(Virgin EMI)In a world of received-pronunciation indie, wispy club-track warbling and London Grammar, it’s great to have Beth Ditto back, with her decibels to rival Aretha Franklin and flotilla of sequinned sizzle. Her first solo album since the Gossip split retells her familiar story of Arkansas gal-done-good, running the gamut of classic 1970s and 80s pop – Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Suicide, Paul Simon – alongside the odd angular stomper that nods to the Soulwax remixes of her former band. Brilliantly, some songs have the effect of Trentemøller’s electro-rockabilly with Ditto as Tarantino heroine, while elsewhere Stevie Nicks dominates, especially on the title track, which coolly updates Mac with a Balearic house beat. There’s even a rock ballad moment on Lover, as if Ditto is alone on a saloon stage until the backdrop falls away to reveal the stadium. Continue reading...

Al Green – 10 of the best
From a chequered career, the tussle between the religious and the secular is audible on all of Green’s best songs – even the ones he hatesHe didn’t think much of it at the time and quickly came to loathe having to perform it, but Al Green’s first hit was arguably the most important record he ever made. Greene – who dropped the e after he released his debut album – grew up dirt poor, one of 10 children born to a sharecropper family in Arkansas. One night, after being paid $800 for an entire year’s work, his parents decided to move the family north. They piled the kids and their few belongings into a truck and hit the road under cover of darkness. Young Albert’s new life in Grand Rapids, Michigan, revolved around church and music, but when his dad caught him playing a Jackie Wilson record at home, he threw his son out of the house. Greene stayed with friends, with whom he formed a band, initially called the Creations. By 1967, the band was aware of their lead singer’s promise and star power. They were billed as Al Greene and the Soul Mates, and released this self-penned single on their own label. The record became a local and then a national hit, and the band were invited to the Harlem Apollo, where an ecstatic crowd called them back to perform nine encores of the song. The performance, however, was only witnessed by a handful of people. Late in 1968, the demoralised singer – now touring solo, his Soul Mates all pursuing day jobs back in Michigan – performed a gig in a bar in a tiny Texas town. On arrival, he discovered he was playing support to singer-songwriter Willie Mitchell and would be backed by Mitchell’s band. Eager to get a break, Greene introduced himself to Mitchell and tried to let the older man know he was looking for help and advice, without losing face by actually saying as much. When it was Greene’s turn to soundcheck,he performed his signature song in an unprecedentedly quiet, low-key manner. Mitchell and his band were won over; after the gig, they agreed
